March 2012 SAT I Writing Thread

hello everybody.
i have a couple inquiries.

  1. was the food coloring one experimental?
  2. and if it was, did you guys get 3 no errors?
    sorry if i’m late. i just got on.

Lanaryu is right it was No Error because “room” was the only singular noun in the sentence

I got the lost experimental. Food coloring, don’t remember anything like that. Most likely experimental.

Yep, 3 NEs. It’s the chandeliers in the room and mirrors; two others that you can find by searching this thread.

Does anyone remember the grammar question about the lawyer?
What was the answer; Did it have a “I” or “me” in it?

Was the answer to the lawyer question A or B?

Pretty positive it was “me”

"…everyone except me was a lawyer." is the correct answer. That was letter B.

But when you seperate it, “me was a lawyer” is not correct. It should say I was a laywer

Nope. “…was a lawyer” describes “everyone”. Pretend the “except me” wasn’t there. We discussed this question before, go read the rest of the thread.

Control+F “Everyone in the class except me got the answer.”

except me serves as a prepositional phrase to the word “everyone”.

What does that mean? WELL whenever there is a pronoun in a prepositional phrase, it takes the form of the object. I is not an object. ME is an object. IF you ever have trouble with these questions, just remember your prepositional phrases.

So far I have everything right but just two questions are bothering me.

what was the Noble peace prize one? I put are since it said among ARE Mandela and MLK

What was the variety of tools one? I thought the orignial might have been right but chose something else.

crossing my fingers im right.

@eagles94

I did chose “ARE” for number 1. I’m not sure if I remember your second question.

was basically asking: “The winners ___ Mandela and MLK”. You can restructure that to “Mandela and MLK ___ the winners” Of course, “ARE” is the correct answer choice. “IS” would have subject-verb disagreement.

@eagles
The answer to the variety one was E. it was the only question that didn’t have both “variety” and “different” in the answer choice hence it was the only answer that wasn’t redundant.

Sorry if you guys have already agreed on the answer for this, but I haven’t seen any discussion of it. The one with “otherwise,” as a choice, was that the answer? It was between this and another for me and that’s what I ended up picking (otherwise)

I was about to put down something other than NE, but I switch to NE. The only thing weird about it was a tense change. “In the novel Salt, author blends blah and blah based off someculture’s mythology, producing a evocative and something book.”

is producing correct? or could it be to produce?

@onmyway2ivy
i put producing as well, because the comma would need to be taken out for the answer to be to produce.
not sure what rule that is, but i think thats the reason

this may have been discussed, but its bugging me, so …
for the question about blah girl taking photos of herself, resembling settings like “those of” old movies, repelled her to fame.
was it “those in old movies(choice C)”
the repelled thing was annoying, ive never heard it used in that context so i couldnt decide what to do about it.

@onmyway2ivy

It should not be changed to “to produce”. “producing” would be fine in that sentence.

Here, if you are interested, you can read up on Participial Phrases. (exactly what the “producing an evocative and something book” is)

Did anyone get “is” as an error? Are you allowed to use “is” at the end of the sentence when saying “The dog is bigger than he is”?
