Marching Band

I've noticed a lot of people on this board mention marching band. As I am in band, and it is the heat of the season, I thought it would be interesting to start a thread. Please post your comments! :)

Are you in a good band? I'm in a really competitive one (we want to do well at BOA Nationals this year) but sometimes wish I wasn't, so it might actually be fun. The day after Nats will be the happiest of my life. No more band! Who-hoo!

Ours is pretty good, but i'm planing on having a band free senior year next year. Practices get really annoying after a while.

Our website is <a href="http://www.nchsband.com%5B/url%5D">www.nchsband.com</a> if you want to watch last year's show.

I'm in marching band. Our mb is pretty good, but not good enough to beat all the competition in the bigger division we just moved up too. I think our show is cool, but...our dance guard has horrendous outfits.

Wow BOA Nationals... you are absoloutely insane. You guys must have to practice a whole bunch. I just come from a pretty typical 120-ish person marching band. We're okay, not that great, but we have lots of fun. I love watching marching band competitions!

How much do you guys practice?

12 hours a week. more for drumline.

In TX we have an 8 hour rule (we can't practice more than 8 hours per week) that I thank God for. This doesn't apply to band camp though, so thats like, 40 hrs per week. It sucks. Especially because it is so HOT here!!

Another topic: what are your shows like this year. We're doing one based on the music of Persichetti. (not my cup of tea, but band directors, a.k.a. judges seem to love him) At least it's not at 180 bpm like last year! That killed me.

during band camp this year they had to cancel a few practices because of the heat. The county got worried because a kid from a highschool nearby died from heat stroke.

Yay marching band. Actually, I just got back from a football game then competition just now. Our band is alright. We're in group 6A in USSBA. Was 5 Open last year. We've on to All States at Giants Stadium before. Our show this year is Harry Potter/LOTR. We practice about 10 hours a week, not counting competitions and football games. It'd kinda crazy. But I <3 marching band nonetheless.

Yay for YouTube.

Us last year:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW0XDA40K0A%5B/url%5D">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW0XDA40K0A</a></p>

That was first show of the season. If I could replace it with a better show from the season, I would, but I can't find anyone who filmed circuit championships. We tried a lot of crazy stuff that year because of a bunch of unfortunate situations, and it worked out well, really. Oh yeah, and it's in 11/4 time. Heheheheh.

This is the first year with my band that they've become judge/score obsessed. We always do fairly well (in ToBs)...but now they've decided that band people need to be able to run and do pushups. It's sad, because that's basically why we all avoid sports.

SO TRUE, SO TRUE. This year, they too decided that we should do Push ups and running. (or, if it isn't running, its doing across the floors at 200bpm!) I wouoldn't mind so much, but the asphalt is amazingly hot. I seriously should bring an egg one day and fry it.

hmm i guess my band might be considered alright...180 wind/perc and about 40ish colorguard i think. 12 hours a week, plus maybe 2-3 hours from the pe band class.

Well, we have some ridiculously awful soccer field to practice on for band. And we wear our marching shoes, which are not bueno for running, and/or standing outside in the sun in. Haha, now the entire band has a cold because we had to march in the rain for the past few days. They're trying to kill us!

We're a good band--probably the second-best in the state?

We don't compete at BOA because our director has a moral thing against it (says that visual effect outweighs musicality to the point that bands who can't play win more than those who put music first, or something to that effect), but we compete at USSBA pretty successfully. :)

I'm the captain of the colorguard, so I spend more time than most people at extra practices for the new members, planning stuff, etc..probably 20 hours a week?

Anyone a drum corps fan?!

oh how i love marching band and drum corps......definitly my life. marching div. II this summer!! sooo excited

I marched Div II Drum Corps last year. ^_^ It's an amazing experience. I wanted to do it again this year but couldn't afford the tour fees because of championships in Pasedena. x.x

As for marching band.... bleh. I kind of hated the whole marching band experience. My band director sucks beyond belief. Colorguard director... also not so great. I thought my senior year of band was going to be amazing, but I wound up hating it most of the time.

what corps?
