To my fellow band geeks...

Hey! I don't know about you, but I am SO excited for next season. At my school, marching band has always been small and not that fabulous (although we have improved over the past 3 years) and they tried to make it only pep band. Two of my close friends and I, the band lovers that we are, decided that wasn't gonna happen. We are organizing a student-run marching band next year of about 25 (yeah, I know, tiny) that is purely optional, so everyone is going to want to be there. We're gonna be awesome. And we're in the process of choosing our show! The choices are down to Hot Salsa and The Incredibles (I personally prefer The Incredibles). What about you? How big is your band? What show are you doing next year? Let's talk about something that we love and not about the stresses of college applications. :)

Just saying The Incredibles would be awesome.

My band sounds like yours, 25 ct., including colorguard, not too fabulous in competitions, blah. Trying to recruit a drumline andcolorguardd for next year is a reaaal bxtch.

This year we did a tribute to the Jackson 5 - last year, Chuck Mangione. Next year, Phantom. Figured we’d jump on the bandwagon.

Good luck with that student-run aspect! Time to rent some Assertiveness for Dummies. :P

Our band has about 150 people… we are a state marching band in Texas

Bach For the New Millennium is our show next year

our band has…get ready for this. 230 kids. were kind of a big deal.

last year we went to the rose parade and the theme was entertainment, so that was our show. im not sure what the theme is next year, but one of the songs is “a few of my favorite things.” ugh.

we have a really cool theme to our band though. we replicate the coldstream guards from england and its really so awesome. everything is so similar to them.

and, not that anyone cares, but i just got named drum major for next year. super pumped.

congrats LHS11…

I am Tuba Section Leader (appointed)

and

2nd Lt. (elected… again)

how does your band do ranks? are you a military style band?

why are band geeks so in love with band…? ugh…

My band has 75 kids including guard, we won 3A state two years ago and got 4th last year… next year we are going into 4A, and I quit =).

no we arent military, we have- non ranking officers (Chaplen, Historian), 2nd. Lt (Attendance, Property), 1st Lt (Leader, Librarian) and Band Captain

Then Section Leaders and Drum Majors

A few years ago my band was at 250 but now we’re at 150 and our director is retiring this year after 40 years of teaching.

Our band has about 30 people in, 30 of which don’t actually want to be there cause the conductor sucks.

band at my old school had like 150 people (not including colorguard or anything…we didn’t have colorguard), and the band director was AWESOME. band at my new school has like 80 people, and we don’t even march! i hate ONLY doing concert band. my old school did mardi gras parades and stuff.

btw alto sax here to rock your world with awesomeness.

I love marching, practice after school Monday-Thursday starting like 2 weeks before school starts, all the football games, an invitational marching contest, Regions, Area, State, Christmas Parade, Homecoming Parade…

we march alot

Looks like band programs in America are a LOT better than Australian ones.

I play the saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, and bari). My school doesn’t have a football team (and thus no marching band), which I’m actually kind of glad about. I like saxophone, but not enough to do all of those after-school rehearsals. I play alto sax in wind ensemble, tenor and soprano sax and in jazz band, and tenor and bari sax in my ska band. Well, I played those two in my ska band, which disbanded recently. Ah well.

I used to play piano and now I’ve been playing flute for 6 years. c: I love concert band/wind ensemble very much, but idk what I would do without marching band lol it’s definitely the best part of the school year. We have loads of fun. @LHS11: I’m drum major for next year, too! & 230!!! That’s insane.

Hmm, let’s see, band is about 170 including about 30 color guard and 20 percussion. Alto sax section leader next year! Show includes James Bond, Mission Impossible, Peter Gunn, etc.

We have about 60 including percussion. Last year we did Night Watch. The year before we did City Lights, the year before that it was Chuck Mangione, and this year we’re doing Firebird Suite with a bit of Rite of Spring mixed in. I like it, but I’m not excited for it. Kind of insulting to a classical music piece IMHO.

We just decided we won’t have a color gaurd. Last year’s was so horrible we don’t want to repeat that crap again. BUT the school dance team (who are national ranking) march/dance with us. It looks great with them.

We have 285 kids signed up for marching band next year. Not sure what next year’s show is going to be, but last year we did Van Halen, Jimmy Buffet, Sing Sing Sing, Bandstand Boogie, and a bunch more.

Sing Sing Sing is the best song ever.

^ Have you heard The Modern Tuba Project do it? It’s amazing. All tubas/baritones. It’s really interesting. (iTunes has it.)
