Hey guys, I got an invite to this program today, I've already been accepted to Marshall. I know there's some classes/programs you take as part of GLP and you travel to China to meet with execs, but can anyone who has been or is currently in GLP tell me more about it? It seems really interesting, and definitely is pushing me closer to deciding on USC.

Hi Seahawk,

My son is a sophomore in Marshall and he absolutely LOVED the Global Leadership Program and the trip to China. (He is home for Spring Break right now and says he envies the freshmen that are in China now.) GLP also gives your priority if you’re trying to get into the Business Cinematic Arts major. I highly recommend it. You are responsible for the cost of the trip, though, and that was tough for us…had to add it to our parent plus loan.

Congrats!

My daughter is also in GLP and she is a freshman and in Shanghai right now.Its really a no brainer…you need to do it.

Legacymom, would you say that the BCA major is more for business students wanting to work in the entertainment industry or cinema students looking to add a business dimension to their education? I don’t have much interest in critical studies or film production, just the business aspect of the industry.

I guess right now I’m trying to solicit opinions on how much this program should influence my decision to come to USC vs. other schools. I took a look at the '11-12 GLP Facebook group and I like how it seems to be an opportunity to network within a small group of 70 people.

Here is the GLP blog from Shanghai

Seahawk,

That is a good question. From what I have observed, it seems to be focused primarily on the business majors wanting to work in the film industry, but they are exposed to all aspects of the film school. I guess in terms of career path, you could say these are the kids being trained to be producers and agents. Keep in mind, there is no other program, to my knowledge, in the country that offers this kind of joint major.

What is your ultimate goal in life? That can help you narrow down your school choices. My son’s teacher had the students survey their parents about their criteria for selecting a school. IMO, the top factor is the school’s reputation for your preferred major. Second, is overall prestige. Third is the opportunity for merit scholarships and financial aid. USC clearly has point 2 and point 3 in your column. You need to decide if they meet point one for you.

My son was accepted into GLP and that was the tipping point in his decision to go to USC. The program did not disappoint. There were amazing speakers for the GLP classes (pass/fail, not academic stressors). He went to Shanghai and had the experience of his life.

My son just got back from Shanghai about an hour ago…“trip of a lifetime” he just texted and overall, a truly amazing experience for him. So, I agree with surflj!!! don’t pass up opportunity to participate in the amazing GLP experience. :))
