Martel College

I just wanted to know if anyone is getting into Martel for sure. Like if there are any legacies (which I don't think is possible because I think Martel is a new college), or if by some other way they are getting into Martel.

Do you really want to get into Martel? Martel is not a college, after all :-D

Didn't they say they'd put you in a particular one only if a close relative is in it? Don't know about legacies.

enh, who wants to be in martel?
they aren't a college, have no traditions and the rooms are tiny (sure they have common rooms, but what about when you want to be in your own room?)
Plus, North servery closes early, and it's so much less homey than the lovett commons.

The rooms aren't bad, not any smaller than those of other colleges. New, pretty nice actually...at least the ones (suites) I visited.

hey jenskate1, just wanted to say something that i thought was really funny that one of my host's friends told me. He said that everything has been on lovett floors. He warned us (I was with another prospy) that if I fell down on a Lovett floor then I would probably get up with 3 STDS! I know that he isn't serious but he also told us a story about some kid that was peeing off one of the stories and someone vommitted on his manhood. I also hear that people just use that gutter thing that goes around the balconies for everything! Jenskate, what is your opinion (even though I know that everyone thinks that their own college is the best).

I think that I would like to be in Martel because I like the individual room, but also there is still contact with the other people in your sweet. I also like the open grounds in front of the building. Anyway, I only saw it at night so I might not have caught all the bad things. I stayed at Sid and their servery was not very good. I got sick from the one meal that I ate there. I also ate at the Wiess servery (i think. Is that where almost everyone went on Thursday after the welcoming?), and I thought that was pretty good.

Drunk people at every college urinate in public - read the police blotter.
Hanszen is the college reputed to have the most STDs, but since condoms are given out free all over campus, you probably should use them at all the colleges where you have drunken hook ups.
I probably wouldn't walk barefoot in that gutter area, but generally all that's in there is beer and rainwater.

Mostly I am just kidding about how Martel sucks. What else do you expect?

I'd like to state that any incoming students shouldn't investigate the colleges too much... You're randomly assigned, so forming any preference for a college would be useless!

If you find a college you're absolutely in love with, chances are, you'll be disappointed. My advice is to go into it blindly and then make the most of where ever you are! :-)

That's good advice - I had my heart set on anywhere but Lovett, and cried when placed in Lovett. But it hasn't been bad at all.

Jen-
Ooh - lovely to hear that about Hanszen. Maybe I should be glad my s. is living off campus next year :)

Torres-
Sid is not exactly known for its tasty food, but the South Servery, that feeds Weiss/Hanszen has very good food. Chef Roger is a pretty talented fellow, and he teaches a very fun cooking class. If you take it, you will be a very popular person on Thursday nights around 11:40 p.m. with the leftovers from your class.

Jym - I know we have been joking around, but I think it is important that I take this moment to make a bit of a public service announcement:

It doesn't matter where you live, whether it's on or off campus, or which college. College students have tremendously high rates of STDs, and you would be wise to use good judgement (whether that means abstaining or using protection is your choice). If your school does abstinence-only sex ed, (and even if it doesn't) and you do not plan on being abstinent, take a few minutes to educate yourself about risks and methods of prevention.

wow. there's a college known for having STDs...jeeez...

I'd like to add that, as a Martelian who just finished her first year there, it was actually pretty cool not having traditions and whatnot because we are the ones who have the pleasure of starting all the traditions. All of the colleges, even as old as Baker, once were in the position Martel is now in. I think it's an exciting opportunity. Besides, we DO have nicer rooms than the other colleges ;) Anyway, the point is that, yes, you'll certainly be happy and have a great time at whichever college you end up in. Don't worry about it, once you've been there a while, you'd never trade living in your college for another for the world :)
