Maryland Priority Deadline Applicants!

ACT 33
Major: pre-med

In response to norcalryan:
Up here in NY UMDCP is viewed very favorably, even though it’s a big state school.

According to the US News and World Report rankings UMDCP is ranked #53 in the nation (both private and public) and tied for #18 in public universities nationwide.

Not too shabby =)

to norcalryan:
UMDCP is also tied for 16th in the nation for best buisness programs and is tied for 10th in public schools. Also, as stated earlier, UMDCP is gaining respect each year, it used to be considered fairly easy to gain admission but nowadays it is getting harder and harder.
those stats were also from US News and World Report rankings

thanks for adding to those stats, papasmurff11!

By the way, did anyone else receive the “postcard” with the priority deadline on it?

On the postcard it says “The ‘Academic Ranking of World Universities’ ranks us 37 in the world, up 38 spots in just 5 years.”

That’s an impressive statistic as well!

Here are the aforementioned rankings for those of you who want to compare:
[ARWU 2009](http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2009.jsp)

Edit:
These rankings are done by the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and their methodology is listed on the website.

UMD has risen in the ranks faster than any other school I’ve seen. In Maryland, alot of kids see UMD as the stereotypical “state-school”. But I guess that’s a natural point of view that kids have towards their state. Most of the time it’s the oos kids that recognize the true potential of the school.

@sub- premed is not a major. It is simply a list of required courses you must take before applying to med school. But I see where you’re coming at. You must choose another major and take the classes required for that major along with the premed reqs. Good luck =]

UMD is in a sense the stereotypical ‘state’ school: it is massive and has a large school population. This can result in a student feeling more like a “number” than a “person”. If you don’t get into one of specialty schools or an honors/scholars program, you should consider and weigh the options between UMD and other schools. I know I will…

ACT: 2 31s (some schools superscore now, such as UNC and Miami, so I have a 32)
Major: Pre-Dentistry

Thanks, misterpop
Yeah… as of now I don’t know what I want to major in… but I’m definitely doing pre-med.
And good luck to you as well!

armaryland17 – I don’t know if I would necessarily say that if you’re not in one of the specialty programs that you’ll feel like a “number” rather than a person. Granted, if there isn’t any effort on your part to interact with professors or TAs, it is possible. I’ve spoken with friends of mine who aren’t in any specialty schools or smaller programs, and they said they don’t feel like numbers. A lot of the professors make an effort to get to know their students, and there are so many ways to get involved that most of the people who feel like they’re just a number here don’t really put forth any effort to find their place. That’s just my opinion though. :)
