hcpss- I don't have exact numbers but I do remember hearing on the tour that it was around a 70:30 ratio girls to boys. There is certainly a large gay community also.

Hey guys, I have a question. I want to apply to MMC next year for stage management. Can anyone tell me how competitive this program is? I have read a lot of people that are going into MT or acting, (well, it is the MT thread, sorry, I didnt know where else to post this.) I am just curious how hard it is for someone that is not going into acting, does the school still take students like me? Anyone know?

I couldn't really give you any definite numbers or anything, but when my daughter auditioned, there were definitely other students waiting that day to have portfolios looked over for their interview. It was a much smaller group than the mt/acting students, but there were at least 7 or so kids waiting with portfolios...I don't know if they had as many dates to audition/interview as the mt kids or if this was the only day. You're best calling or writing the school to ask directly.

Im not too far from NYC,so that wouldnt really be a problem, thanks. Im really intrested in how their program is though and what its all about, anyone gone through it or know any info?!?

Bump......!

I've looked into the school myself for Acting so I've been trying to find any info out that I could about the department as a whole. My impression is that it is easier to get accepted as someone in design, management, etc. than it is for acting and MT. From what I read on a community for the school a former lighting tech major said that the department is mostly comprised of actors and dancers. So unless they get a huge insurgence of applicants you probably have a decent chance of getting accepted.

Well that´s good, thanks! I wonder though if it is not a big program, how the classes are and program is overall. I guess if they don´t have many people in the program, and the acting and MT are always doing shows, then that leaves a lot of practice time for the management crew. So you get more experience, so that could be good too. Hmmm.

Well from what I gathered it's not extremely tiny, but compared to the few hundred actors I guess it seems to be. I'm not sure how many they accept a year but I know sometimes the actors double major with the BA in performance and then some other aspect of design or management. I believe that if the actors don't get cast in the mainstage than they can always work on crew and stuff. You could send an email to the admissions department about the size and stuff of that aspect of the department.

The department as a whole is top notch and makes for good connections and work opportunity once you graduate through the professors that teach there; students intern all around the city. I'm guessing that if the management program is structred anything like the BA performance program, then you would be allowed to work on a show outside of the school like the actors can. Again you'll need to ask someone who knows for sure! Perhaps try searching on Myspace or Facebook for a student that goes there and see if they'll chat with you a bit, best to hear it directly from them. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the info, i´ll check on FB and see if I can talk to someone.
:)

Does anyone know if all the acceptances have gone out yet?

Both acceptances and rejections have gone out to people that had the earlier auditions. I still haven't received any news yet (I auditioned Feb. 2nd) but the reason is because I didn't have all my admissions materials for the school until a few weeks ago, so my school acceptance didn't arrive until about 2 weeks ago.

I'm assuming I'll find out when the last cycle of auditionees are notified, probably next week or so. The waiting has been KILLING me though!

Thanks -- a student of mine auditioned at about the same time you did, and she hasn't heard anything yet.

My D auditioned January 26th and got her rejection letter a couple of weeks ago. She was already accepted academically by the time she auditioned. Just a heads up (although I am hoping you get a nice acceptance letter) as we have discussed this issue on the Rejections thread: The Marymount rejection letter is not worded very nicely and is quite hurtful. Everyone that read it has agreed it is one of the worst sent out. Also, my D was told that she was not accepted into the BFA program with a concentration in MT. While we were there, MMC spent a LOT of time telling us that you can not pursue a BFA with a MT minor. On her card, my D indicated she was open to any of the performing arts programs. I called the admissions office and was told that her file is still open and it does not indicate that she was declined. She has decided not to go to school there anyway.

I just got my acceptance letter today, I assume that everyone else's letters will be there soon!!

My D auditioned in San Francisco on the 19th of January and received her acceptance in mid-march for the BA theater Arts Performance with a minor in MT which is the only way you can do MT there. They won't let you do a BFA in MT or a BFA in Acting with a minor in MT.
We are visiting next week, April 8th and maybe the 9th to see if she likes the program. She LOVES New York City, so we'll see.

Just to avoid any confusion, MMC doesn't have a BFA in MT. They only have a BFA in Acting and Dance. Though the MT minor equates to just as much time as a BFA would.

My D was accepted to the BFA in Acting program for next year. We are trying to decide if it is worth the price tag. I'd like to hear some feedback from students that are attending now -- is it worth it? How are your classes? Do you make contacts in the real world?

I've read through this whole thread and cannot begin to tell you how helpful it has been! Since MM is my first choice (I'm currently a junior, though school's out in a few weeks, so almost a HS senior), I have some other questions...

First, I'm looking at the BA in Theatre Performance with the MT minor. What did most people wear to the audition, for those of you who went? Will there be time to change into dance clothes for the dance portion of the audition?

Also, I read that a lot of hopefuls did overdone material (Millie, Wicked, etc). Other than singing unique pieces, what set apart the accepted auditionees from everyone else? Energy? Personality? Anything they're specifically looking for?

(And if anyone has any song suggestions, I'd love to hear them) :)

From what I can gather from this forum...can you audition for the BA Theatre Performance and MT minor and get in for the BA but not the minor?

Finally (thanks for being so patient!), I'm most likely going to apply ED. Does this mean that I'll find out about the program before everyone else? (From what I saw on here, you said everyone found out in the spring, but I didn't see anything about ED students).

Thank you!

Hi! My D is very excited about being at MMC in the fall for MT minor and BA performance.
The auditions were done as a group- she said that the auditors made everyone feel very comfortable. THe dance portion was seperate and there was plenty of time to change before and after. She might even have come in dance clothes and changed before the monolgue/song portion. She said they work with you a bit-so it's probably good to be prepared to be flexible and show that you can take direction.
As far as ED- MMC has rolling admissions for academics- seperate process for auditions. Although notification is still rolling depending on the date you audition, I still think everyone gets notified about artistic admission sometime in the spring.

My S is starting MMC in the fall. He's BFA Acting, a bit different from the MT minor, but PATheaterMom's right about the auditions and the admissions.

Be ready for a long morning or afternoon, though, because it is all done as a group, and depending on where you are, it can be a pretty big group! (30 or so in SF) They do work with you a lot, so you have to be ready to do things over, differently.

They are rolling academically, and you can get in academically and not into the MT minor. I am virtually certain though that you don't have to commit in any way until you know that you are in the MT minor.

One unusual part was that they only wanted one monologue. Everywhere else my S auditioned wanted at least 2, some asked for 3. I would have 2 ready, though, just in case. As to songs, if you post that question on the main MT thread, you will probably get lots of good suggestions.

Good luck! Hope to see you there in a couple of years!
