D will attend Florida State School of Music and has been invited to live in the Living and Learning Music Dorm…glad it is decided and the process is over! Thanks to all CC folks who walked us through this experience.

Everyone has been amazingly helpful! Best of luck to all the sons & daughters out there who begin their next step.

It was down to the wire for our son as well…it’s Oberlin for Vocal Performance. So thankful for the CC members sharing, it was such a help and comfort through it all.

BassDad, I took a break from the forums but I’m back, and I have to make a correction/clarification:

The Columbia/Juilliard Exchange does not lead to a BM from Juilliard. To do the program we had to decline the Juilliard offer, accept the Columbia offer, and then some e-mailing relinking the two. It’s a 5 year deal where if everything goes to plan, he spends the first 3 years as 80% Columbia, 20% Juilliard; then at the end of year 3 he applies to the Juilliard Masters program, and then would spend years 4 and 5 as 80% Juilliard, 20% Columbia. At the end of all this he would have a BA from Columbia, and a MM from Juilliard. Not at all like the double degree programs he had been focusing on, with 2 bachelors – a little less and a little more, all at the same time.

Anyway, I wanted to clarify, also for future readers looking at this program.

I too am amazed this journey is finally over, as yet another non-musical parent with a child determined to make a life in music. My daughter had a wait list acceptance last week so I thought we might have to hit the pause button on a final decision…but she had her mind up. It’s Drexel, for music industry, where she’s also been named an AJ Drexel Scholar. She was admitted into the BS/MBA program. She may or may not do the MBA piece, not sure yet.

A huge THANK YOU to all on this forum who have contributed to the music business/industry threads. It has been incredibly helpful.

What a stressful time we’ve been through! S finally decided on Rutgers Mason Gross for jazz trombone performance, and his scholarship was increased from $8k to $10k per year.

D will be attending University of North Texas College of Music for BM in VP. She is happy and excited but also VERY, VERY disappointed to have to decline her first choice school, Oberlin. Despite a good merit scholarship, we are not eligible for need-based aid and Oberlin remains far too expensive. However, D will be studying with top faculty at UNT and she has been invited to join the internationally known A Cappella Choir. They are traveling to South Korea in the fall! My D received in-state tuition at UNT based on good academics and also received a merit scholarship. Relatively speaking, UNT is a very affordable option and I urge other parents concerned with finances to take a look at their programs. Despite great success with pre-screenings, auditions and scholarships, we have found this to be a very stressful process. The waiting was very difficult! For me, it has been very hard to accept that my D will be very far from home in Texas. I was hoping she would be within a day’s drive, rather than a plane trip away. Thank you again BassDad for your service. Throughout this process, I have been a frequent vistor to CC. I think it gave me a sense of control over the process but, with amusement, I realize that it was probably a false sense of control. Nevertheless, it’s been helpful to know that other parents and students are experiencing the same stuggles. Congratulations to parents and students for getting this far. Celebrate a future in music -it will not be easy, but despite the challenges, there will be many rewards!

Oh my goodness, it was beginning to seem that I would never be able to write this post. Since my son, Julian, is a transfer student, NYU had a very different schedule for admissions and financial aid offers. The music department there was very responsive and helpful to us. And NEC was amazingly patient in allowing us extra time to respond to them. Since the financial offer came yesterday from NYU, Julian could then respond and accept their offer of admission to the Steinhardt school as a BM, composition, piano. He was a bit torn as he has such respect for NEC. But for him, the presence of the musical theater and film departments at NYU, and the possibilities they offer for getting involved with these disciplines that he loves, was the real draw. He’s also psyched to live in NY - the city where he was born and lived in until he was 7 yo.

We’re excited for him and hope that this turns out to be a challenging and productive time for him. For me, I’m now trying to get myself ready to start helping my current HS junior daughter to apply for film programs!

Thanks to all for the help and support. I intend to visit these boards to offer what little I might be able to to the next class of applicants.
