While I understand what OperaDad is saying, the number of people doing double degrees or such programs in any given year is going to be fairly small. There may have been three or four last year. I think that slight amount of redundancy is a small price to pay for the simplicity of indexing that the doubled listing provides. Without the doubling, one would have to read all records to find whether a particular secondary school was represented. With the doubling, it is obvious from a quick scan of the list.

cartera, it is even worse than you suspect. I started taking things apart at home at a tender age. Now, I earn a living by taking things apart, subjecting the pieces to all sorts of stress and telling the manufacturer how to improve them. By the time I am done with them, however, they usually cannot be put back together.

I've been thinking about the "University of Southern North Dakota (Hoople)" vs. "Southern North Dakota, University of (Hoople)" vs. "North Dakota, University of Southern (Hoople)" formats and I come down on the side of the first of those formats for reasons of readability by humans. It also seems to be the way that the majority of the college sites that I frequent alphabetize their lists. I also think we should use violadad's suggestion that U stand for "University" or "University of" to promote efficiency and lessen the need for broken lines. Hence:

Hey I don't know if this matters to anyone but the new format that is being used which lists each applicant's acceptances on a separate line in first list instead of using just one line that is allowed to wrap if needed may leed to a very long list by the time we are through. (ex simplelifes 's has 3 separate lines instead of 1). Looking at last years list it was 7 screens long using the one line per user name that then wrapped if necessary (using that method I didn't see any username that required more than 2 lines to display all of the colleges they were accepted at even though several had 4, 6 and one even listed 8). I know my daughter has applied to 8 colleges and even if she only gets into 1/2 of them that will be 4 lines just for her....I know many of you are in the same boat.

Anyway...just food for thought....It is much nicer to read the way operadad set it up now but does anyone care how long the list becomes??? I'm good either way... violadad, BassDad..you've both been doing this along time...any suggestions?

Never having had the courage to attempt something like this, two thoughts occur to me.

A "long list" is better for us, right? :-)

Since students receive word of their acceptances to different schools at different times, I'd recommend going with whatever format our volunteer compilers find easiest to work with. I'm just happy to have the information and I appreciate the work!

Every year there is a list of students attending regular (i.e. non-musical) schools that is MUCH longer than ours and they seem to be able to deal with scrolling up and down the page as necessary. I like the improvement in readability that OperaDad's suggestion of one entry per line provides. I think it will be easier to maintain as well, as stradmom has just mentioned.

BassDad suggested improvements in last years list over the prior year, and the suggestions for this year all make sense. Length really doesn't matter, as long as the info is readable, and there is a sense of order.

The list along with its counterpart of Final Decisions are useful tools for newbies, and provide a range of potential sources for direct pm/email contact if one wants specific school or program info. The easier it is to read through, the better.

While I understand what OperaDad is saying, the number of people doing double degrees or such programs in any given year is going to be fairly small. ... I think that slight amount of redundancy is a small price to pay for the simplicity of indexing that the doubled listing provides.

Using NEC/Harvard, and NEC/Tufts as an example, I think most people will know that NEC is the music school, and that Harvard and Tufts team with NEC. Someone looking for Harvard music major could look under Harvard (if they are only admitted there for music), and NEC/Harvard for the dual degree candidates.

Do you list Oberlin Con/Col, and Oberlin Col/Con? What about Eastman/U of Rochester, Jacbos/IU; etc?

For Oberlin, I would list the College acceptances first, then Conservatory, followed by the Con/Col dual degrees.

For Eastman, I would list Eastman and U Rochester (non-eastman) separately, and put Eastman/U Rochester after the Eastman list.

OperaDad, hang around the Selection and Admission forums awhile, and you will see the lack of knowledge and understanding of schools, relationships, and the intracies of performance based admits specifically and music focused degree pursuits in general.

I for one would rather see the distinction made in the Music Major forum in an effort to educate the masses, including the neophyte.

I will say that you could not have underestimated my ignorance about these distinctions when I began lurking here.
Or do I mean overestimated?
In any case, I think the more clear the info the better, even if it makes for a long list.

I agree with violadad that there is a very wide range of knowledge among the people who contribute to this site, and I imagine that is also true of the people who read the site but do not post to it. Many people simply are not going to know to look among the NEC entries to see if someone who has been accepted there might also be attending Harvard or Tufts.

The overhead involved with dual listings is small and it makes finding the secondary, non-musical schools much easier than it would otherwise be. Yes, I would suggest dual listings for Oberlin College/Oberlin Conservatory, Eastman/U Rochester, and Jacobs/IU as needed. I would be happy to type the extra line for each of those who are involved in those programs because I think it makes the list easier to use for those who are not aware of all the possibilities.

Yes, it goes against good database principles to have multiple entries containing the same information. Unfortunately, the CC interface does not have the querying, sorting and display capabilities of a database, so when making our own sorted lists we sometimes need to do things a little differently than we would if we were working with a full-blown relational database.

Adding from another thread: (Note that I've labeled the degree BS, as the only reference I could find within Drexel's info implied a BS designation to that specific major.)

I thought the "U of x" issue was hashed out in post #'s 60 & 63 herein. My reading is that a consensus was reached to retain last year's methodology for this aspect as I saw no objections or change recommendations after that discussion.

I will happily abide by a consensus. I'm not trying to pick nits, just establish a modus operandi. I'm just a lackey, not the creator.

The listing is amended to reflect the agreed upon practice.

We are all creators. Not wanting to fuel a format war, but updating to what I thought was what we had agreed on for double degrees, and cleaning up a minor spacing issue. I agree with violadad on the U issue because I think an entry starting with U in between Lawrence and Miami just does not look right, plus we would then have to decide whether to alphabetize C St. Rose as starting with Sa, St or R.

Another thought occurred to me. With the one person per line format that was OperaDad's idea, we can simply change the "+" at the beginning of the line to "*" to indicate a final decision. That will eliminate the need for the square brackets, make decisions much more obvious within this list and make generating the list of final decisions much easier than it was last year.
