Master List of Music School Acceptances, Fall 2009

Sure thing. I was waiting for an excuse to restore the space after the line of underscores anyway...

Like we really need an excuse to tinker with the format. Last year I think it took 4 pages of posts to get it ironed out. :D

At this point, it is not so much tinkering with it as adhering to it. As we have seen, it is quite easy to get the capitalization wrong, or to omit a space on either side of a hyphen, or to forget to alphabetize a sublist of schools after a person's name (or a sublist of people after a school's name). I seem to recall several postings from one or the other of us last year that started off with "Just cleaning up" or words to that effect.

Haha, I love how technical this whole thing is. It cracks me up! :)

With good reason - a techie designed it and it has evolved from there to cover some complicated cases, e.g. the same person applying to several schools with different majors at some of them, to different parts of the same school with different majors at each, attending completely different schools simultaneously with different majors, dual majors, double degree programs, multiple minors and so forth. Then someone asked if we could index the list both by person and by school. Then we started indicating final decisions. It has gotten rather complicated to be able to represent a complicated underlying data structure.

Perfectionist - geewiz :)

Would you mind saying that in front of my wife? It would give her a good laugh.

certainly...put her on....Now I can't speak to the other areas of your life....just what I've
witnessed here.

Really I think we are all just looking for something to keep us occupied whilst the college
admission folks are having a well deserved rest....

It took me a few minutes, but I figured out the format and made a few changes:
1) one line per school per person - easier to read long lists
2) If a college's name starts as "university of", then it is moved to the end of the name (helps in alphabetizing)
3) removed "'s" to help shorten the line

Suggested Format:

First section is listed alphabetically by User Name, college. Second Section is listed alphabetically by College, User Name.

First Section format:
"+" [user name] [D or S for daughter or son if being posted by parent] ":" [major] "-" [college]

Second Section format
"+" [college] "-" [major] ":" [user name] [D or S for daughter or son if being posted by parent]

my guess is that the "+" is to help identify the beginning of a line, when a line is too long and wraps.

If the new format is preferred, then I suggest copying the format info into the first post on the thread.

I like most of OperaDad's suggestions. The + was indeed intended to distinguish the beginning of an entry from the beginning of a wrapped line within an entry, since CC automatically eliminates tabs and more than one consecutive space character. I cannot copy the format to the first posting because postings cannot be edited after about 15 minutes. The best we can do is to use the modifications going forward.

The one thing I would like to keep is the "'s" or just a lone apostrophe where applicable. It can certainly be understood to be present in front of every instance of a D or S, but I want to maintain a format that is friendly to both humans and machines. The omission of the possessive does save a character or two per line, but it just reads wrong in my opinion.

Another thing that we want to consider is the representation of double degree (e.g. Oberlin) programs where the same person is admitted to two different parts of the same college or University, and joint programs (e.g. NEC/Harvard) where the same person is simultaneously admitted to two different schools. It would be nice to list both institutions on the same line in that instance. My suggested format for that would be

username's D: BM vocal performance - New England Conservatory & BA history - Harvard University

username's S: BM double bass performance - Oberlin Conservatory & BA neuroscience - Oberlin College

Harvard University - BA history & New England Conservatory - BM vocal performance: username's D

New England Conservatory - BM vocal performance & Harvard University - BA history: username's D

Oberlin College - BA neuroscience & Oberlin Conservatory - BM double bass performance: username's S

Oberlin Conservatory - BM double bass performance & Oberlin College - BA neuroscience: username's S

Note that separate entries are generated for each of the schools, so that it is still easy to see from the beginning of the line if someone is attending a school of interest.

The other thing that I think we should do is to eliminate the use of the word "classical" within a major. Classical can be understood to be the default unless some other genre is specified.

And yes, I sure hope username's kids are getting some good financial aid.

Here is the list in the revised format suggested by the above two postings. Let's use this as a template going forward until someone else has more suggestions. Note that the upper list will be alphabetized first by user name, second by degree and third by institution. The lower list will be alphabetized first by institution, second by degree and third by user name.

And, by the way, welcome to OperaDad and congratulations to his son.

I think since this forum is about Music Majors, the double listing under the non-music school is redundant. I think a dual program entry under the primary music school will suffice.

Do you guys take things apart at home just to put them back together by any chance?

In general, I'll agree with the changes. My only suggestion is to revert to last year's practice of abbreviating University of Whatever
to read as

UWhatever

and follow an alphabetical listing like below:

Similarly, Podunk University should simply read as

Podunk U

This saves a few keystrokes.

As for the academic degree/music degree combo majors from seperate programs, my feeling is that for the few times it happens, it's important enough to focus on the distinction. It may be redundant to those familiar with the offerings, but my feeling is that it serves to delineate some of the misconceptions of what's available, particularly to the neophyte.

OperaDad, welcome and congrats.

cartera, need anything fixed? :)
