Congratulations once again to jazzdrum and Son.

I have a question regarding the terms of my D’s acceptance to a major state university’s program. She had hoped to pursue a BM in vocal performance. She auditioned and was instead accepted into the BA of Fine Arts program. When we called for further explanation they said that the curriculum was basically the same for the first year, but she would probably study with a grad student instead of a professor. Is she wants to, she could audition for the BM program again in one or two semesters. I was not aware that this was an option when auditioning. Is this standard at most music schools? Is there any advantage to going this route. She has another acceptance for the BM program at a small LAC right now, so we’re gathering information so she/we can make the best decision.

It is possible that this is how they get around the issue of full time faculty teaching majors. Or it may be the case that they could not reliably predict whether she was a good candidate for a vocal performance major. Regardless, she should be pursuing an education that gives her choices int he future. First year studies in a BA are good preparation for various majors, and any music courses could count toward a minor if she decides to leave music.

There is a big difference between a major state university and a small LAC, culturally and the teaching/learning style. What would she do at the LAC if she decided not to continue in music? Would it be a good fit for her with various options?

Good luck.

Our daughter has been accepted to the Northwestern University graduate program for clarinet performance. She’s completing her bachelor’s degree at the University of Minnesota with Minnesota Orchestra principal Burt Hara, who I understand is leaving the university after this year. Still waiting to hear from the other two schools where she auditioned.

Congratulations to juniorbill and Daughter.

This just in!!! Our son just accepted to SUNY Fredonia for Music Composition (main instrument viola). Still waiting to hear on a few more schools. Thanks everyone for all the great posts! I’ve been a long time reader of this board and have found the information here extremely useful through the whole audition prep and process.

Congratulations MamaPajama - always nice to welcome new composition families!

Thanks SpiritManager and BassDad! Yes indeed a BM. This is his first acceptance, so we’re really excited for him.
