Son just admitted to NYU (Steinhardt) and Northwestern both for BM Performance (voice).

Congratulations tenormadre and son.

BassDad, D is still waiting to hear from MSM next Friday. If she gets in she will have to make that agonizing decision of conservatory vs university. She really liked both schools, even though they are totally different. I doubt MSM will match Vanderbilt’s extremely generous FA package, since MSM does not meet 100% of need - Vandy does, with no loans, only grants. As a family of limited means, this is a major consideration, especially knowing she will go on to grad school.

@BassDad - can you please post a reminder of how you decide to indicate that a student is accepted to both the music program and the academic program at a school? Or a link to the post that details your guidelines?

Is it only when the student is contemplating a dual degree (ending up with a BM and a BA or BS)? Or only if the student is planning a double major?

Ideally, this could be a footer to your Running Statistics post…

There’s some nuance about the process that I’m not understanding.

Thanks!

mtpaper, there are five cases to consider:

1) A standard listing, as are most.

2) A double major, for example Musician1’s daughter’s listing for Hartt which lists one degree and uses & to link the majors.

3) A dual degree at the same school, for example Musician1’s daughter’s listing for UConn which lists two degrees, repeats the name of the school and uses + to link the two degrees.

4) Two degrees at different schools with one of the degrees not in music, which would look a lot like the previous case except that the name of the school after the + would be different from the one before it. There would not be a separate entry for the non-music school in the list of acceptances by school.

5) Two degrees at different schools with both being in some field of music. This requires two completely separate entries in our database so that we can indicate acceptances at both places when the list is sorted by school. We had an example last year with one person who was accepted to the NEC/Harvard program and chose to study composition at Harvard.

We rely on the student or their parent to tell us which of these cases applies. If someone is only investigating the possibility of a dual degree we will not list it that way until they are formally accepted into such a program.

Does that answer your question?

Yes, that delineation helps a lot. However, it doesn’t include the option for:

Accepted at School X for BM in Y
Accepted at School X for BS in TBD
where the student may not know whether it’s a double or dual degree until they are seriously considering attending School X… or when they actually attend School X… and it might even change once they are attending School X. If a student is accepted to School X for BM and at School X for BS, but has decided not to attend School X, then the student wouldn’t know whether it’s a dual or a double, nor would they bother asking School X for clarification.

or
Rejected at School A for BM in Y
Accepted at School A for BA in TBD

these are also interesting results… and I say this because of how many threads there are discussing the whole issue of dual degree and double degrees, and remembering how many hours I spent last Fall trying to figure out where we could use one application to yield multiple results.

Hmmmm I think the assumption is that a family knows, if they applied to the BM and the BA/BS programs, whether the student would pursue a dual or a double. We didn’t make that decision ahead of time, nor did we retain what the schools told us. We were just maximizing our options and figured we’d cross that bridge when we got there.

This is not critical by any means, and, as I’m not the one doing the legwork, and the majority of students do not seem interested in multiple options, feel free to ignore me!

In your first example, we could temporarily list just the music major acceptance if the student is uncertain, or we could list it as a dual degree if the student were reasonably sure they would pursue that option were they to attend that school. If the student makes a decision that would change their listing and we know about it before locking down this thread in the late summer time frame, we would change their entry in the database accordingly. This allows us to catch most decisions given a May 1 answer date and wait list acceptances in the month or two after that. We do not track changes to past threads once they are locked, but we are interested in transfers which would get published in the acceptance thread for the year in which they occur.

We have decided not to track rejections. We tried it a few years back and did not get many takers. I think that is understandable. In your second example, if TBD turned out to be music related, we would enter that as a standard listing if we know about it before locking the thread. If TBD turned out not to be music related, the entry does not belong on this list.

Congratulations to Amusicmomma and daughter for daughter’s acceptance to the Syracuse University Setnor School of Music as a voice performance major, as noted on another thread.

BassDad - just a niggley, OCD copy editor thing - UT Austin’s School of Music is Butler, and U of Houston’s is Moores with an “s”.
Both fine institutions, btw.
Thanks for all of your efforts compiling this - how did you take on this labor of love?

S accepted at Berklee, confirmed Spring 2012, waitlisted fall 2011 (guitar/film scoring)

Also accepted at Temple, BS in Music

Moonmaid, thanks for the corrections. I have made the changes in the spreadsheet and they should appear on the next report.

I started doing this several years back when I noticed acceptance threads on other areas of CC, but not for music majors in particular. I thought the process was enough different from general college admissions, so started a thread.

Congratulations, honestmom and son.

Hi! I’m a soprano - here’s my list so far. I’m planning to major in classical performance.

USC - Accepted
University of Denver - Accepted
CU Boulder - Accepted
Michigan State - Accepted
SMU - Accepted
Vanderbilt - Waiting
University of Michigan - Waiting
Oberlin - Waiting
Rice - Rejected
NYU - Rejected

@moonmaid

I have tried to reply to you 3 times, but the message has flown off the screen twice. So I appologize if this is a repeat.

Anyway, congrats to your D on acceptance to Blair!

My D is very excited to have been accepted at Blair, and we also received a very generous FA package. We couldn’t believe how great the aid is - with no loans. We have not yet visited Vanderbilt, but are going to try to get down there in the next couple of weeks (we are in CT) to have a lesson with the cello teacher and see the campus.

So glad to hear that your D liked Blair when she visited. I have read that some students are put off by the Greek life (my D would not be interested in that part of college life) but we have heard that the Blair students are a nice bunch.

My D also got accepted at BU School of Music this morning…she is very interested in BU also - she loved the cello teacher there and felt the music dept was very profesional .We have visited twice and that is on her short list. However, BU FA is not nearly as great as Vanderbilt, and that is a big factor for our family.

D has a couple of schools she is still waiting to hear from, She also got accepted at a couple of really good LAC’s …waiting to hear on FA from them.

It is a REALLY tough decision time…but nice that we all have some good choices.

It looks like you are from the Texas area from where your D applied. My D applied mostly to NE schools, but also Oberlin and Peabody (still waiting to hear).

We will look forward to hearing where your D ends up - MSM would be such a different atmostphere than Vanderbilt. My D goes to a pre-college program in NYC every Saturday and loves it. However, the Vanderbilt campus looks georgeous!

@BassDad

D accepted at Boston University School of Music - cello performance.

Thanks!

Congratulations to cstarry7 and to celloliz and daughter.

Congratulations to everyone on all the acceptances. I always think that this next part is actually the hardest part of all - making a choice, and having to give up all the other choices at the same time. When you or your child are applying you can imagine all those different lives - all the wonderful professors you’ve met, the students, the college towns/environments - all the varied experiences that might be yours (or your child’s) going forward - but then comes decision time and it’s almost like grieving for a loss of all those lives you won’t lead, and professors you won’t get to work with (yet) and friends you won’t be making (during the school year.)

And probably by this point there have been genuine exchanges with the professors and you don’t want to let them down, or hurt anyone’s feelings, and you hope one day you might get that chance to work with them after all. And some of the colleges have called, sent generous financial enticements, emailed - you don’t want to say no to someone who wants you, truly wants YOU not just an anonymous application.

Or perhaps your heart tugs for you to choose one school, but your head tells you to choose another - for who knows what reason. How does a young person know which to listen to?

Truly - I feel for all of you. It’s a wonderful thing to have such choices, and yet it is probably the most significant decision the student has ever had to make to this point in their lives. Just know that for most of these students there will also be graduate school and summer programs - and those same professors, and those same students you have to say no to now, will have another chance to be part of your life in that unknown future.

Daughter accepted to:
Boston University, BM vocal perf
NYU Steinhardt, BM vocal perf (classical voice)
Syracuse University Setnor, BM vocal perf
Ithaca College, BM undeclared (voice)
It’s been quite a journey to this point. We’ve leaned so much from everyone on this forum; thank you all for sharing your wisdom! And congratulations to all the kids on their dedication, hard work and accomplishments!
