Congratulations to TrumpetDad and son, lovetheviola and Octaves and son.

raddad, I appreciate that the writing is what will distinguish the future of most composition majors. Still, to maximize the usefulness of these lists for future years, it could be helpful to distinguish the piano-oriented singer/songwriters from the electric-guitar-oriented singer/songwriters from the acoustic-guitar-oriented singer/songwriters from other combinations. It is not my intent to pigeonhole anyone, rather to allow others to create connections with those who have taken a similar path in years before them.

@Bassdad, Thanks for asking specifically about the instruments. Please put piano/voice since they are equally divided. Raddad explained it well when he said that the songwriting ability was a big part of the audition at USC. …he actually used guitar and voice on some songs, too, but piano is his main instrument. @Raddad, thank you so much for offering some insight. I most definitely will be PMing you :-)

S was Accepted at NYU Steinhardt (composition).

He also got a yes from Juilliard (organ) and what makes it even more interesting is he got into Columbia (physics and philosophy) so he could do the exchange program where he’s a Columbia student, taking classes at Juilliard. If anyone has info on how this works in practice, please PM me. We did look into it, but not too deeply as we didn’t want to get our hearts set on it, since, well, you have to get into both schools.

Still waiting on Peabody and McGill. This is going to be a very hard decision.

Congratulations to squiggles1118 and to mrky and son.

mrky, your son has taken the first two necessary steps to getting into the Juilliard Columbia exchange program, but the third one, getting accepted to the exchange program itself, may be the hardest step of all. Your son should probably speak with admissions at both schools to see what he can do to maximize his chances.

Thank you for that advice BassDad. His Juilliard letter says he can choose either Juilliard or the exchange program, but his Columbia letter did not say anything about Juilliard. Next call, Columbia admissions. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention!

Congratulations!! Can I ask you how you found out. Was a letter or an actual packet that arrived in the mail? Also can you see what date on the envelope it was mailed? Thanks so much and as a musician myself, let me tell you, you scored a great one with NEC!

@lovetheviola my father talked to a former admission person from peabody and she said it’s a very good sign if you haven’t received a letter from peabody yet. they mail all acceptances on april 1.

Just received an offer from U of Miami for 25,000 a year!

has anyone received a letter from Peabody yet? I haven’t heard that they have and would think that they would mail both acceptances and rejections together. Just wondering about the thoughts regarding the “it’s a good sign” comment

My S has a couple of friends who did hear last night, but they also were applying to the dual degree program with Hopkins. So, maybe Peabody does not notify via the Hopkins method of emails last night?? Only speculation. We have not heard a word since audition. I’ve learned to take everything with a grain of salt when it comes to “so and so” said. That’s my two cents on anyone’s inside scoop on “good signs.”

I am a Bass Dad groupie. My son was accepted into Mannes, NYU, Manhattan S. Of M., Bard and Stony Brook Music Dept. for Double Bass performance.( NEC has not replied yet !? ) Not all aid package info has arrived. Will post later with more specifics. Thanks so much for sharing your stories and helping not only dispel myths and fears but also for contributing your useful insight and perspectives. Congrats to all and good luck to you and your children in their musical endeavors. Your kids should be proud of you. : ) Auditioning for 8 schools is no picnic , ( especially with a double bass on your back ! ).

Hi MTmom14, I received a large envelope in the mail yesterday that was postmarked on the 27th. According to NEC’s website, US applicants will hear by post and international applicants will hear by email. Thanks and good luck! :)
