onekidmama, total sympathy for you. It has been such an awful roller coaster here as well. My son finally got two acceptances, and was put in the studio of the teacher he wanted to study with at each. But one offered absolutely zero aid. And then today he gets an email from the other saying, Oh, sorry, we made a mistake–that teacher’s studio is full…He is just so completely frustrated and upset by all of this—and we are all just basket cases.

Yep, still stressful time waiting on " official" studio and merit info. Both of which can make a huge impact on final decisions!

I really want to say that all here parents are just amazing. How nice they do for their kids. For me, I’m an international student and I prepare all by myself and it was really tough time. Whenever I had a time, I come here and feel the parent’s supports and loves. It is just awesome that parents encourage their childeren and support them. Even though I got few accepted schools, I might have to give up with disagreement from my parents. I will pray a lot to achieve all of your children’s dream school at the end. God will bless all of you! =D> =D>

Just count the minutes until you are doing this all over again for grad school :((

Clarimom, I liked your post, but really, it’s an unlike. What??? I am so sorry to hear about this roller coaster for you and yours. I didn’t know that a school would/could rescind a studio placement. Wow. Maybe a call to the school would help?

Good luck to you Zang! And God bless you too. :">

@clarimom – That is awful. I am so sorry your son and you are going through that. I can only imagine how that felt to him, to get that news today. I guess all we can do is hang on for the rest of the ride. One of these days, we can perhaps share a beer with our kids (if they’re of age, of course!), and laugh about this experience. My S may end up taking a gap year, if nothing works out, and as long as it’s a strategically planned year, it could be a good thing. Keep us posted. I hope there are some other options for him that he likes.

For anyone who hasn’t heard from a school yet: Send them an email! Things can get misplaced, overlooked or lost at this busy time of year, and you should have heard from them by now.

Grrrr, I will try to adjust the Yale thing, but we’re out of room on the list because this year’s is so long so I have to economize where I can! I’ll make it YSM.
As of today, I’ve re.ached the character limit on the list, so I just might have to split it in two, with VP and Comp on one list and everything instrumental on the other. We shall see!

Another thing I’ve learned is that more and more kids are taking a gap year to apply for grad school and then again to do their DMA apps if that is the route they choose. It is very difficult to handle the demands of senior year, performances and juries, senior recital and prepping and maintaining audition rep. In the end, no one will ever care (or know, for that matter) if you take an extra year or just decide that things didn’t go as hoped this year so chose to give it another go next audition season. Sure, you’ll have to pay on student loans, but only for about 6 months and then you’ll hopefully be in the school you hoped to be.

@onekidmama- It never gets easier. Our kids have chosen performance careers so life will continue to be one big audition for them. If you’re going to maintain your sanity, realize that you’ve done what you can and that he’s worked as hard as he could and the rest is not within your, or his, control. Then sit back and enjoy what he’s doing at the moment because there’ll be something else just as nerve wracking coming up soon! Let me know on those acceptances and I’ll include them.

@Clarimom- I can not believe the “mistakes” some schools make. That plays with emotions and they absolve themselves from all responsibility. If your son really wants to study with that prof, suggest that he send him an email, including the copy of what was send which clearly said that he was assigned to that studio, and ask if there is any way that a space could be made for him. All he could hear is “no”, but the teacher should be aware of the error.

@zzhang- Check your Inbox. I sent you a PM.

Onekidmama and clarimom,
I feel for what you are dealing with as my son is a MM candidate as well. The violin and clarinet are so competitive. The bass has its competition but not the volume of applicants and the anxiety of pre-screens that your children faced. It sounds like they handled these unique stresses very well.

One thought on the admissions letter from the college. We discovered that with some of the big universities, there was a separate application for the college and the school of music. One school wanted transcripts sent to both the school of music and the university! Needless to say, my son didn’t do that and only applied to the school of music through their portal. He ended up not completing the application at that school. The two large programs he applied to only sent acceptance information from the school of music (did a follow-up-they said it was not like undergrad). They indicated that no letter from the university would be forthcoming. You may want to call FSU and see if that is the case.

Clarimom, I am so sorry that that studio made such a mistake with your son. I can’t begin to imagine what an emotional rollercoaster that was.

Mezzo-the gap year makes tremendous sense. My son was overwhelmed with the senior recital, senior independent study, performing groups, subbing with orchestras, making audition videos for summer festivals and missing so much class. He has warned me that his grades will not be as good this semester. I am impressed that he was able to meet all of those demands! He is having a very difficult time refocusing for this last month of school. I think he wants to simply relax.

We learned a lot about money and music. Some of the scholarships/ fellowships were disappointing-the more competitive the school, the less $$ S was offered ( as would be expected but wow what a difference in amounts). The money was a big factor in my son’s choice as the college fund has dried up after putting two kids through college. We can help some but not as we did with undergraduate school. A new instrument looms on the horizon. He seems to “outgrow” instruments as fast as a child moves through shoe sizes. He wondered if his instrument hurt him in one audition.

Music is a complicated business and I admire the passion and tenacity of our kids.

HOrnet, are you saying your son might take a gap year?

My mom called the Peabody office because I hadn’t heard back yet… apparently the committee is in deliberation about my acceptance! ACK! That’s not good news
Accepted to Gettysburg/Sunderman Conservatory of Music, Lawrence Conservatory, and St Olaf for BM violin. Rejected from Eastman, Oberlin, Bard, Rice, Northwestern.

@violinistmylife, it’s not good news-but it is also not bad news. If they are in debate that means someone is pulling for you.

Clarimom-

It seems to me that the honorable thing for the school with the full studio to do would be to hold your son’s acceptance for one year. He may not desire to take a gap year, but if knew he would be able to enter the desired studio would that make a difference to him? Maybe when he contacts them he could propose that - along with a nice scholarship for the blunder on the part of the school!

I’m trying to figure out a scenario in which the studio offer was rescinded. 1) sloppy administration? 2) someone was supposed to graduate but decided to stay on? In either case, an awful way to be treated.

My son asked all the right questions about this. He was told that it is a problem of returning students, not incoming students. My hunch is someone graduating has decided to stay on for the M.M. So, he has some thinking to do with all the curve balls he has been thrown in his options. And, yes, a gap year isn’t entirely out of the question.

Clarimom, this is genuinely appalling. I thought I’ve heard it all.

I suppose this frustration for your family is feeding into our own. FA angst, you know. DD’s most desirable acceptance is also the most stingy… . This is the real world. Most here understand it.

We all have challenges, though I’m very surprised the school handled your son’s issue in this way. “Studio is full” is arbitrary, as the size of teachers’ studios are not written in stone and can vary a bit year to year if they choose to.

Do you think it’s usually beneficial to stay at the same school for MM? At first, I was absolutely set on going somewhere new, because it seemed that change could have so much value in itself, but I’m now reconsidering for many reasons. What are some thoughts that you or your children have had after deciding to stay at the same school for MM. Are you glad that you/they did?

Glassharmonica,
My son is going ahead with the MM. The application and audition process was stressful and I don’t think he wants to deal with that again in just a year. Gap years are a thought though…He has not turned in the the acceptances/declines for three of the programs he was accepted to. Last night he got a call from the teacher in one of the top places he applied. He was in rehearsal so he missed the call so it will be interesting to see what transpires there. S had written the grad school at this program asking for more $$$ but was told they could not negotiate until the declines to offers from other accepted students started coming in.

Clarimom-that makes sense about the current students (but doesn’t make the scenario okay). My son was originally contacted by the piano tech at one school about an assistantship and invited to come visit. Two weeks before his audition at the school, he received an e-mail indicating the position would not be available; the grad student currently in it was staying on another year.

I do know some schools work in their current students who did not get the offers at grad programs that they wanted. S has a friend who will be staying at his undergrad school for the MM since the MM schools he was accepted to did not offer enough money to make attending a reality.

@Gradschoolbound1, my daughter is grappling with the same question!
