Cost Constraints / Budget Looking for as much aid as possible. Family has 2 other children in college plus younger siblings
Applied to:
Reach: Notre Dame, Clemson
Match- Elon, High Point
Safety- Pace University, Sienna College
I’m asking on behalf of a family member, who is aware that I’m soliciting feedback on CC. She is looking for schools in the Southeast with a good business school that will supply aid. The cost of college is a major concern as there are several children in the family (2 others currently enrolled in college). Trying to avoid state schools that cost more for out-of-state students, which may, unfortunately, rule Clemson out even if she’s admitted.
I don’t think the family member will see significant merit from many (any?) of the schools on the list
Notre Dame (super reach) - no merit
Clemson (reach) - no merit for that stat level OOS
Elon doesn’t give much automatic merit (<$10K) but has competitive merit opportunities that can be applied for - still not huge amounts given
High Point - not sure how their merit is awarded, but they do give it.
Someone mentioned UofSC - getting harder to get into as an OOS applicant (particularly into Darla Moore). I don’t think there would be any merit at that stat level for an OOS applicant.
Looking just in the SouthEast and cost is a concern check out University of South Florida in Tampa OOS tuition is about 18000 per year and COA just over 30K don’t expect merit. Freshmen | University of South Florida
My daughter with higher gpa/sat (3.9, 1470/33) did not get those awards at Elon, so it was not affordable (she applied to 20 schools, best merit offers were temple, Saint Joseph’s and SUNY BING).
Thanks. Should’ve mentioned that they want to avoid the vax mandates of the NE schools.
ND- she knows it’s a big reach, but her cousin went there and each one gives it the ole’ college try.
Are you talking about the COVID vaccines only or all required vaccines for entering college students. I’m asking because there are vaccine mandates at just about every college for things like MMR, DPT, polio, Hep A and B. Etc.
If she’s looking for the southeast, then it’s pretty tough. I tried using Pennsylvania or further south, and I included an Indiana school as you already had Notre Dame.
These schools all seem to define need fairly generously (using the average net price costs by income as a guage). These were as close to the southeast as I could get
Christian Brothers (TN): Did not indicate % who receive need-based aid, but 99% of need was met by those who received it. This would be extremely likely for admittance.
Trinity (TX): 100% of freshmen with need received aid; 94% of need was met. Probably a reach, but an attainable one. Would want to weigh whether to go test optional, as 39% submitted the SAT and 29% submitted the ACT, so nearly 70% submitted test scores.
Lycoming (PA ): 100% of freshmen with need received aid and 92% of need was met. This would be a likely admittance.
Valparaiso (IN): 100% of students wth financial need received aid and 95% of need was met. Extremely likely for admittance.
Emory & Henry (VA): Did not indicate % who received need-based aid, but 93% of need was met by those who received it. This would be extremely likely for admittance.
Gettysburg (PA ): 99% of freshmen with need received aid; 90% of need was met. Would probably want to apply test optional. This one would probably be a toss-up for admission.
