is there any difference between Math 19A-01 and Math 19A-02? Math 19A-01 starts at 3:30 and ends at 4:40, and that sounds terrible to me, 02 starts at 2:00 and ends at 3:10 which works out a lot better for me, so if theres no difference my life is easier.

also are the optional discussions and labs helpful enough to make them worth the while?

The difference? Who’s teaching it. Bauerle is teaching the 3:30 section. I had him for 19A and he is an EXCELLENT teacher, I cannot stress that enough. The teacher for the other 19A class is undecided, so who knows. I’m guessing it’ll be Eastman, but who knows.

The discussion sections are often worth it. And if you take 19A with Bauerle, you’ll have to go once a week anyhow because of quizzes. Unless you feel like losing %10 of your grade.

well now im having trouble enrolling because it says i havent met a prereq for it. although im able to enroll in AMS 11B, since i already took the equivalent of 11A at my CC. so i should be able to go into 19A no problem

@inkoso: No go. AMS 11B is not at all the same to Math 11B. AMS 11B is for econ majors, and Math 11B is mostly for bio/chem majors. So what did you take the equivalent of- Math 11A or AMS 11A? Either way, 11A doesn’t work as a prerequisite for 19A. You need to have either done an equivalent to Math 3 or have scored 40+ on the placement test (meanwhile, 11A takes 32+). I suspect you could talk to a counselor about it and get that fixed up though, because it makes no sense that you can’t take a slightly harder version of calculus after doing the “easy” version.

yeah i want to talk to a counselor but none of them are in anymore unfortunately. what counselor would i even talk to about this? an advisor in the math dept? or my major department, which is econ? or my college? so i guess i have to wait…

Well its pretty weird. on my transfer credit report in My Academics, it says i have fulfilled AMS 5, Math 11A, and Math 19A. I took a calculus and statistics class senior year dual enrollment at my city college. I want to take calc again from the beginning because i took calc fall semester last year, and so i dont think im fresh enough to go into the second half of it. Also i am trying to keep a high GPA to be able to transfer easier, hence why i dont want to put myself in a position where the transfer credit i got, didnt cover all the stuff im expected to know for say MATH 11B or 19B. Right now im in AMS 11B, and i feel i would like to take MATH 19a so it looks a little better on a transcript, and also because the Math series transfers well between majors

edit: i tried signing up for MATH 19B and i could no problem, for some reason will it not let me retake a class i have credit for? thats stupid

Math department adviser, major adviser, either would do. Hell, see if they have a phone number for a quick response.

I will warn you though. While math 19A is relatively easy especially if you have done calc before, 19B is a GPA-killer. You may not want to go the hardest route if you GPA is top priority.

mhmm. my only reason for taking the 19 series is because i want it to look good on later applications (transfering, or for a masters degree) but currently im in AMS 11B, where does the AMS course take you? more importantly is there anywhere that will give me information about what courses lead to the next, or what math requirements i need for the global econ major? i looked on the econ dept website, it just says 11a and 11b math for economics.
I spoke with an advisor a little while back who said you could do the AMS route, MATH 11a route/ECON route, or do the MATH 19a which was the hardest, but she reccomended it if i was considering grad school, which i am.

You could try e-mailing Bauerle. For me, he responded very quickly. Within a couple hours and sometimes even within a couple minutes. I e-mailed him at 2 AM once and he sent me a reply in a couple minutes. I was pretty surprised, to say the least, lol. Also, he’ll forward your e-mail to a mathematics advisor if he doesn’t have enough info or can’t answer your question.
