math 32A

How many people who have had Chayes for Math 32A actually got an A? I'm actually getting kind of apprehensive as to my performance in the class because a) Chayes NEVER solves sample problems in class, he just goes about his derivations ("claims"). b) Majority of his HW problems can't be solved without the help of TA or Chayes during their respective office hours c) His HW is unnecessarily difficult.

Hmm... I'm glad I didn't take his class... Lol. I have Demeter and he's A LOT better. Sorry that I can't really help you....

I feel your pain. My Math 32A and Math 32B professors never solved any problems and spent most of each lecture writing down the derivations from first-principles for each and every theorem/law/equation. It was like attending an Honors math lecture but without the actual honors credit.

Oh GOD, I am in his class right now and I feel like crying. I don't get half of the HW. If the stuff isn't in his lecture and isn't in the textbook, how does he expect us to know it? I have to look half the stuff up online, and even then some of the concepts I find in like advanced Math papers written for journals. How do you test a student on how well they are learning stuff they are not being taught? I guess we are about to find out.....

I feel your guys' pain.. the class is so hard.. his derivations are hard to follow because he moves so fast.. and his homework is sooo hard!

on a sidenote, hw that is graded really really really sucks

my friend has him right now too... ive seen some of the hw u guys get... SO HARD...
i feel bad for u guys =[
but to answer ure question
22% A
47% B
24% C
4% D
2% F

I'm still so bitter, so I just have to add that it's better than

47/150 = F

Do you realize this thread was bumped up from 2 YEARS AGO?! Random. #3 + #4

lol yes it has been 2 years. But I guess one thing remains the same: Chayes is still horrible :)

and he looks like a bum

AHHA WOW i usually notice outdated threads... but this one was too perfect... the month and day are like syncd with current time... its just the year thats off by 2 LOL

goodluck to everyone (including myself) who has midterms for Chayes tomorrow..

so if you got a 75 on the midterm and the mean is 80.2 ... what does that mean? Did I do decent?

Rough guess of B-/C+. Depends deeply on the standard deviation and the polarity of the professor's grading system though.

if the mean was 80.2, his class can't be that hard...

The standard deviation is about 82. Damn this doesn't sound too good.

 A standard deviation of 82?!?!??? What the heck is this exam out of? 800 points?

Woops I meant the median is an 82. His class is hard. I just have ridiculously smart people in my class.
