I am registered as a history major but have decided to change my major to pre-biology. My orientation is the 9th-10th and I was hoping to register for this class to meet prerequisites. Anyone know if this class is hard to get into?

i’m pretty sure that you can just sign up. the 34AB series is generally known as math for humanities majors. there is a placement test that you have to take to get into the 3ABC series, but that’s because the 3 series really delves into the fundamentals of calc.

There aren’t any prerequisites for MATH 34A… I expect that there will be a lot of space in the class for the fall quarter, since it (as well as MATH 3A) will be taught in Campbell Hall, our largest lecture hall.

At last summer’s orientation, I was still able to get into MATH 34A after ECON 1 and ECON 3A (which are necessary courses for the Business Economics major, which is really popular) filled up, so I’d think that you’d have a good shot of getting the class.

flushmaverick,

i know this may be going a bit off topic, but since your a business econ major too,

i was wondering wut classes i should try to register for for my fall freshman semester?

Well, I’ll show you my first year schedule, and then I’ll tell you what I think I should have done differently. (I’ve bolded pre-major courses.)

Fall:
MATH 34A
PSTAT 5E
ARTHI 6A

Winter:
ECON 3A
PHIL 3
PHIL 20B
ARTHI 6F

Spring:
ECON 1
ECON 3B
MATH 34B
PHIL 100B

This worked out pretty well for me, but I’m taking ECON 2 this summer/now to finish up the pre-major (I get the credit for the class, but it won’t count toward my pre-major GPA). I should’ve just taken ECON 1 during Winter quarter and ECON 2 during Spring quarter. My goal was to finish the pre-major as soon as possible, so I could start working on the actual major.

I recommend taking at least MATH 34A (if you’re taking the 34A-B series) Fall quarter - your professor will be the guy who wrote the textbook you’re using, and he teaches his class pretty well.

And even though it’s recommended that you take ECON 1 and 2 before taking ECON 3A, that’s not really necessary… I don’t see how micro- and macroeconomics (at least the way it’s taught here - pretty different from AP Micro/Macro) prepare people that much for introductory accounting.
