Hi, this question is for sbuadmissions, if you happen to see this. I currently enrolled in SBU this fall as an undergraduate freshman, and took the math placement exam in July and got a 3. Unhappy, with my score i retook the exam on the date of my orientation receiving a 4, however, the SB staff told me it was not valid for i could not take the exam again so close to my previous exam. I decided to accept the score of 3 and enrolled in the class MAT 123 "Intro to Calc" After going to class this past week I have realized this class is far to easy for me, for I have already covered all the materials in the course in highschool. They also put me in Chem 129/130, which is a complete joke to me, for I took Chem Honors in HS, and took AP courses in other sciences (not chem) and received good scores. I took Pre-Calculus in 11th grade, and a high school level Calculus course in 12th grade. I plan to hopefully drop by the advising staff on Monday (which i hope they are there because it is labor day and classes are canceled) in hopes of taking MAT 125 "Calc A", Chem 131/132(lab). I was wondering if Stony Brook makes exceptions for scores on the math placement exam which are clearly a inaccurate representation of my mathematical ability. I am a biology major, and hope to satisfy my pre-health requirements to apply for medical school. I do not wish to take a extra semester of classes which are far to easy for me.

Strange, my friend got a 3 the first time and took it like 2 weeks after to get a 5 and it was accepted. It states on the site that "You can take the proctored exam up to two times during an academic year. To retake the exam, just schedule a new sitting (see the previous question). " so you should have been able to. I’m not sure of the specifics of how the leveling works but if you complain enough you can probably easily get the switch. However I am worried that while you may have taken it in High school and think that your current course is easy, the exams in the future may prove otherwise from seeing your two assessment attempts. Just make sure you really understand the fundamental material because moving up first so you don’t get thrown off later.

Would anyone happen to know whether or not the advising staff will be present on this Monday September 7th (Labor Day)?

I believe all campus offices are closed.

That said, to the original poster, you’ll need to talk to your advisor. Start with your Undergraduate College advisor; if you’re on campus, start with your hall director and work from there. The placement exam is a guideline, not a rule; if you’re underplaced, they’ll work with you to get it right.

Hi, so I retook the math placement exam on Thursday Sept 10th, and received a 5, however, it has now been 8 hours since I took the exam and the results have not been reflected on my SOLAR account. Does anyone know how long it takes for the new math scores to be updated on SOLAR? I wish to enroll in my classes and the deadline is nearing.

I don’t know, but you might want to call either the Math department or the Transfer office before close of business today to see what they say.

Chris

My Math score finally got through the system; however, all the chem classes are closed. I went to the head of the department and registar, they said apparently there a ridiculous amount of people on the wait list. Why doesn’t Stony Brook open another section for Chemistry, if there are so many students who wish to take the course. They suggested taking it in the spring, however, this will put me behind a semester in my premedical prerequisites along with the fact they don’t offer Chem 133LAB in the spring. What can I do?!? Is there anyway I can bring the issue to a higher authority? I joined the University in hopes of accomplishing my goals medicine, instead I’m not even allowed to take the class which is absolutely necessary to me. Please help.

Yeah, the lack of chem classes is a MAJOR problem it seems(since orientation).

Wow! I got very lucky. One position opened up out of 576! However, I had to basically drop all my classes to fit in a very awkward place in my schedule and had to recreate the rest of my schedule. Stony Brook really needs to open up more chem classes.

Does anyone know know how long it takes the Registar to process a Time Conflict form. Tomorrow is the last day to add classes and I finally got a hold of my professors/director to sign the form.
