Hi everyone I'm a freshman here at duke and will be registering for spring classes soon. I'm taking Math 31L right now but I don't feel comfortable taking 32, does anyone know of an easier math course that I could take? I heard stats here is rather difficulty and I'm also premed so I know that I need one semester of calc and then another math. Is one semester of calc sufficient for the MCATs?

First of all, MCAT doesn't have math and no calculators are allowed as far as I know. So if there are any math involved, it's elementary (my dear watson).

But for premed, I think some schools might require a year of calculus so you should look into that. If you end up taking it and you feel in over your head, definitely try to hit the ground running by going to office hours, arranging for a peer tutor, etc.

As for another math class...one of my friends took stats 103 or something like that and he said it was not that bad. Tests were multiple choice IIRC. I don't know if that's generally the case or just for that prof. Maybe you can check that out also.

haha thanks SBR, my friend told me that only a few med schools really stress a whole year of calc and that you're usually ok with one semester, but do you know of some that require a whole year?

Some schools that require one year of math:

1) Harvard (does not accept statistic instead)
2) Johns Hopkins (does accept statistics)
3) WashU in St. Louis (does accept 1 semester of statistics)
4) Duke (does accept 1 semester of statistics)

Schools that doesn't specify 1 year of math:
1) U Chicago
2) Wake Forest
3) Yale
4) UNC (advance math work is preferred)

Those are just what I can find in a few minutes

thanks again SBR :D
you're so helpful!

I'm in math 32 this semester and I don't think it's unbearable. Just expect to spend a few hours every week in the help room...

Math 32 is not easy at all.
As someone who took Math 103 and is taking Stats 101 now.. I'll let you know- Stats 101 is ten million times easier than Math 103.
A lot of pre-meds take the 'easy way' out and do fine, :)
I've heard Stats 10 is the best of all classes (from people who took Stats 10 & 100-level Stats classes).

thanks Mondo!
Unfortunately i just realized that as a bio major 32 is required for graduation :/ so i guess ill just have to brace myself lol!

I also have a couple friends who really don't want to take stats or calc, do any of you guys know of a relatively easy QS course? we've looked through econ, poli sci, sociology, and psych bu not sure which ones are more "mild" math :)

I agree that after taking Math 103, Stat 101 was so much easier and better. It was really straightforward and can also be useful for other majors. I would try that if you are looking for math - it's much easier than the classes in the math department. There is also stat 102 if you are interested in medical/legal applications (I think it switches off)
