Math/Computer Science & 4+1 w/UPenn

How difficult are the Math & Computer Science Majors at Haverford College? My math foundations are not amazing but I’ve become enamored with the subjects.

Has anyone had experience with the 4+1 program with UPenn, specifically with Computer Science? How was the pacing and the difficulty level with that?

Hey there! I’m still a frosh, so I have limited info (aka no idea about 4+1 programs, hopefully someone else can chime in on that!)

I’m actually also someone who didn’t have a great math foundation, but after a semester I’m now considering being a math major! I came to Haverford looking for a small, friendly, math department with a good reputation, and it has proved wonderful. I don’t think the math or computer science majors will be a walk in the park no matter what. But for someone who was worried about being behind in math, Haverford has been the idea place to learn how to study, form working relationships with other students, and get support when I need it. I can’t say enough good things about Haverford math. If you’re looking for a challenging, intellectually curious environment but you’re worried you may need some time/resources to “catch up”-definitely recommend.

I haven’t taken a computer science course, but I know people were fond of both the regular and accelerated intro courses. The 4+1 is a big draw for some people. Again, computer science seems rigorous but not unmanageable by any means. The one issue about computer science is that the lottery is usually brutal-so getting into a class can be hard.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about specific courses-I’d be happy to talk more in depth about my (albeit limited) experiences or share things I’ve heard from upperclassmen.

My son just graduated with a dual degree, one of them in CS. They offer more of a theoretical background in CS, and the department is not one of the larger ones. However, I think it’s growing. It’s a very challenging degree, but I don’t think it’s impossible. Plus, as the last post said, the professors are very supportive. There is one professor in particular that is extremely difficult, but the others seem more manageable.

Sorry - I realized I didn’t answer your question about the 4 + 1 program with Penn. My son didn’t participate in that program, and I don’t know anyone who did. You would probably be better off talking to a professor in computer science to get their take on it, and ask them if they know anyone who went through the program that you could talk to.
