and i checked my email. so this is that crappy math class, biskup. he sent a mass email saying

「In the meantime, I reviewed your performance throughout the quarter and
assigned final grades. I followed the internal directive we recently
agreed at our department: Do not pass anybody who clearly underperfoms
the standards expected from a math major. This made me assign a
significant number of Fs, some of them even to people who I know tried
hard during the quarter and yet did not do well on exams.」

If i received the mean score of 14/30 on this final, am i going to get an F? what does it mean significant number? is he allowed to fail that many people? it sounds like he is and that he has permission from the math department

You received the mean score. I do not believe that "clearly underperfoms the standards".

From this rubric, I would estimate your final grade to be a C. A significant amount of Fs could mean up to a fourth of the class .. much more than the usual .. I would guess that this was overexaggerated.

Don't worry, you will pass the course. However, I must say 32B is twice as hard as 32A.

sometimes i wonder, why is the math department such a pain in the ass? Everyone I know is complaining about the 31/32 series, even math majors. Why the hell don't they just lower the standards to pass? We should petition (im not even taking any more math and im ****ed off).

crap i dropped DIFF Eq with her and changed majors because i didint get it.

Ohh well.

I dont like the UCLA math deparment AT ALL>

I am sorry but they just cant teach IMO.

Math is Math and having a teacher that is good makes all the diffrence. You cant make calculus be different at a CC than at UCLA for instance, even if you make it hard, if you teach it well, it would be doable. Thats now the vibe i got at UCLA at all. Half the time most of what the teachers said made no sence to me....

i thought kucherenko was great - really nice and definitely a fair grader on exams. the midterm was made up of problems straight from the textbook so you should be well-prepared if you do your weekly homework assignments (and not just straight up copy the answers)

and the distribution was:
A- to A+: 31
B- to B+: 37
C- to C+: 47
Lower than C-: 9

EDIT::
[Quote]
he failed 41 people out of a class of 150!!

Compared to Biskup, I'd say she was quite generous :)

Regarding the grading, keep in mind that a lot of these courses have been taught for years. I'm sure that they try to keep the exam difficulty and grading scheme fairly constant. As a result, there should be an internal standard for what counts as an A, B, etc. Therefore, if one class underperforms they shouldn't adjust the scale to give out an equal number of higher grades, just as if a class overperforms they shouldn't be harsher.

Obviously, if the professor sucks that's a problem, but no professor on earth is going to admit that.
