How do you decide whether to take IC or IIC? For a junior taking the test at the end of this school year who has finished pre-calc, which one would be better to taike? Thanks. Karen

I've had two kids take the SAT IIs. Both took IIC at end of junior year ahd Pre-calc.
Kid #2 took IC as well in May of junior year but did way better on IIC. IC requires material learned much earlier. Hope this helps.

junior in pre-calc now and my teacher told us we'd be prepared to take the IIc at the end of the school year

If you can, take the IIC. (Ignorant) People think that because the IC is easier, they should take it. They are dead wrong. The curve on IC is horrible. On IIC according to sparknotes 42 right and 8 blank is an 800 (means you can also have 44 right and 6 wrong and get an 800).

Look at it another way: beginning with entry class of 2006 all UC's will require the Math IIC and will no longer accept the IC. That will mean that 20,000 or more students who previously would have only taken the IC will now take the IIC and many of those are likely not to have the full math background to score very high on the IIC, meaning its curve will likely even get better than it is now.

drusba i have not heard that from anyone else. Please give a link to prove that.
That requirement is kind of an impossibility since in lots of schools including mine only the higher math classes are able to take the IIC in time. If you are in algebra 2 in 11th grade (which is standard) and precalc in 12th you may not be able to take the IIC in time.

drusba you misunderstood. The UCs will not accept the IC but will accept the IIC. They will not require you to take the IIC.

"Freshman applicants must submit scores on two SAT II Subject Tests in two different subject areas of the students choice: history/social science, English literature, mathematics, laboratory science or language other than English.

Completion of the SAT II: Writing (with essay) and SAT II: Math Level IC will NOT meet the fall 2006 requirement. Applicants may, however, submit a SAT II: Math Level IIC score to fulfill the requirement."

IIC, without a doubt. Why not take them next December, after you've been in calc for three months? I'm sure you'll do fine.

Take IIC, it looks much better.

I stand corrected. I had misread the UC requirements. You need not submit a math SAT II.
