i took stats fall first year. going to take college algenbra in fall next year and then social science calculus (im an econ major) in spring.

i heard you have to take your math in fall to transfer? was that to have your math igetc done? or is that including assist classes like calculus? is that fine or am i screwed?

You /can/ take it in the Spring, but some of the UC’s may look down upon it even though their website says it may be completed in Spring. They view you as a risky applicant if you’re completing a math/english requirement prior to transfer. I’ve been told by a UCSB admissions counselor that there is somewhat of an unspoken rule to reject those sorts of applicants, but I can’t tell you if that happened to everyone. Just finish those requirements ASAP, don’t wait! By the way, I never took college algebra, but does that not count for the math requirement at your school…?

Your first assumption is correct. There’s an element of risk involved if you haven’t completed a single transferable math course by Fall before you transfer because it’s a basic entry requirement to apply to a UC along with 2 transferable English courses and 60 units. The UCs aren’t really expecting you to have ALL of your math pre-reqs completed by Fall and generally allow you to finish “A FEW” pre-requisite courses in spring, math or otherwise. Obviously the earlier you finish your pre-reqs the better, but it’s not even a requirement for admission to have them all completed. A problem arises if you’re a transfer that hasn’t completed a single transferable math course at a CC by the time of the TAU. Math is often viewed as a challenging subjects and the UCs because they don’t see your spring grades until after they accept you don’t like to have to speculate if you’ll meet that basic eligibility requirement for admission. In your case you’ve already done so with your stats class, so you should be fine completing calculus in the spring.
