which is easier to take because I have heard 211 is easier but would a full calc class really be easier than brief survey of calc? I took the AP Calc exam but got a 3 so I have to take this but I know the material already.

MATH M119 is definitely the easier of the two.

The grading curves for the two classes are about the same, but that’s only because it is mostly math or science majors taking MATH M211, whereas it is mostly business majors taking MATH M119.

P.S. MATH M211 is also a 4 unit class, while MATH M119 is a 3 unit class.

I have the same question! I took calculus in high school as well, and I did fine in the class. Due to extraneous circumstances, though, I did not score highly enough on the AP test to pass out.

I heard M211 is easier if you already took it in high school because the material is taught in the same order as high school calculus, like you start with derivatives. I heard that M119 begins with the word problems, like CeRT.

I think I’ll retake calculus at my community college (College of Lake County) over the summer if I can. One of the classes would transfer over to IU as M211 and worth five credits. Another option is to take a class at the community college that transfers to IU as M212 (this is honors, right?) but only worth four credits. Which should I do? I’m very confident that I will do well in calculus, especially considering I already went through it and excelled.

I’d probably take the 5 unit one–only because the grade isn’t going to show on the IU transcript in either case–so all they are going to see is that you passed the class. Therefore, I say try to get the most units possible.

Hope you enjoy your calculus class next summer.

Good point, Calcruzer! Thanks!
