I'll be going into the upcoming semester as a mechanical engineering major, and was wondering which math class I'm supposed to take first. Would it be 31A? And I took the AP Calc AB test two weeks ago. What score will I need to get in order to be exempt from having to take the math placement test, if it's required? Thanks!

since you’re in the school of engineering and applied sciences, you need a 5 on calc BC to get out of 31A.

That site is out of date. I know people, in engineering, who’ve taken the AB tests and gotten out of 31A. This site below should be accurate but to be absolutely sure contact some official at UCLA.

Ok, bump. With the same question.

I got a 5 on the AB Calc test. Do I need to take the Math Diagnostic Test at orientation? I plan on starting with 31A

You shouldn’t need to take the placement test and you shouldn’t be allowed (nor should you want) to take 31A.

Could you please explain that second part? I shouldn’t be allowed to take 31A?

I got a 5 on my calc BC with AB subscore of 5. I’m also a mech. engineering major and do i have to take the math diagnostic test?

Oh, I see now.

So nope, no Math Diagnostic Test for us! Hooray!

EDIT: I actually have a question about the table.

Under a score of a 5 for AB Calc, it says Credit for Math 31A. (Enroll in Math 31B/3B). But for some other scores on the AP Calc tests, it says 4 or 8 credits for Calculus. I’m confused. Isn’t 31A Calculus? Or does that refer to credits you can use for whatever Calculus course you take AFTER 31A/B?

If you get a high enough score for “Enroll in [Blank]” that means you are able to skip courses in the series and start with what is in the blank.

The “X credits for Calculus” are generic credits that may give you a higher class standing (ask if you want to what this is specifically). They don’t let you skip any math courses.

No, with scores that high you shouldn’t have to take the math placement test.
