So I'm terrible at math. I'm a student at UCSC, and I took precalculus my first quarter and got a NP. But I was able to satisfy the Mathematical and Formal Reasoning GE by taking an Astronomy course (Overview of the Universe). My question is, will this Astro course count as the math requirement as a transfer? I applied to UCSB and Berkeley, but I didn't really think about this until now. Would it be beneficial to retake precalculus this spring?

Introduction-to-Statistics was made available for non-math doers like us. That class is easier than Algebra 2 (seriously).

You might want to look into the UC Reciprocity agreement, meaning if you finish your G.E’s at one UC they’ll transfer to the other UC and you only focus on your upper division classes. Otherwise, you’d have to check with Berkeley and UCSB and see which classes transfer because not too many people on here are going to know.

The MF GE is particular to UCSC only and UCB or UCSB will not care for it unless you’ve satisfied all your GEs at UCSC. In that event, you would have UC to UC reciprocity and you’ll be done with all GE/IGETC/L&S requirements for good.

However, if you don’t finish your UCSC GEs then I would doubt that it counts as a math course to satisfy either campuses respective math requirements. Also, if Pre-Calc is a major per-requisite at UCSB or UCB you definitely have to take it. If not, focus on your major pre-reqs and satisfying GEs, IGETC, or L&S depending on what you’re going for.

We sign up for classes later this week, hopefully you’ve got things figured out by then. Also, a heads up, you have to update each campus for the changes in your coursework for the spring if it’s going to be different from what you put on your UC application and the Transfer Academic Update.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions, I go to UCSC too. Hope I helped.

Thanks for all the responses. I met with a counselor today and I’m going to try and finish all my GE courses before I transfer. I’m going to take statistics this spring, and I’m kind of scared. Does anyone have any experience with how difficult it is?

Mikali, I have taken statistics and I have to punch myself for not taking the class earlier. Just memorize the formulas (which may seem complex but once you know it it’s easy). Also it only uses basic adding, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
