On the Common App, I have a choice to apply to either NYU or NYU-Polytechnic Institute... Which is better or more appropriate if I want to pursue a B.S. in mathematics (applied or general). Any help/idea is greatly appreciated!

Courant is ranked numbero uno in applied mathematics!

NYU Courant. That’s like one of the top 10 math departments in the nation. I would apply to both if that doesn’t take much work. For math, NYU is much better than NYU Poly. Unless you get a full scholarship from NYU Poly and NYU charges you like $40k/yr with no aid, then pick NYU.

NYU, hands down.

NYU ofcourse

My dream is to study at the Courant Institute.

NYU will definitely give you a more rigor math education. It’s much harder than Poly, I’m not even going to deny. :/

I would apply to both because both schools give very DIFFERENT financial aid packages BUT only if financial need is an issue for you. Also, warning/disclaimer: I’m somewhat biased because I attend NYU-Poly.

FYI, you can’t get a B.S. in Math at NYU.

yeah you can: [Department of Mathematics, Courant Institute](Department of Mathematics, Courant Institute)

unless you’re in that specific program though, BS degrees in NYU CAS are only offered in Physics, Chemistry, and Neural Science. don’t ask me why you can’t get a BS in bio or biochem, it’s weird. in general, I don’t think it matters whether you get a BS or BA in Math; Courant is highly regarded and unless money is an issue, I think it would be a better place to study Math. it does ultimately come down to personal preferences, finances, location, and other issues. good luck with everything!

The OP asked which is more “appropriate” not which is more prestigious. Depending on his or her stats, financial situation, whether he’s interested in engineering mathematics, Poly may be a more appropriate decision. NYU’s math program is second to none, but I don’t think Poly’s is an automatic no. “NYU, hands down” is, of course, a silly answer. It may not be a fit without some other information about the original poster. It’s like someone asking “should I apply to Harvard or UVa?” Well - how should we know?

touche, Techy. yes OP, what do you wish to apply your degree for?
