Mattresses

How thick are the mattresses in the freshman dorms? I bought a 3 inch thick mattress topper that is amazing so i really want to use it, but I was wondering if the sheets I bought that fit 13inch thick mattresses will fit on both the duke mattress and the one I bought or if I need to buy deeper pocketed sheets.

Also how long are the twin mattresses, because my mattress topper is twin size, and while I don't need the x-long size because I'm not that tall, do you think that will be awkward? The mattress pad comes in x-long but its more expensive and also currently out of stock. Should I wait til it comes back in stock and spend the extra money or does it really not matter?

I think that if you would fit on a twin mattress topper that you'd be fine. The beds are twin-XL. Can't really help you with the thickness, though.

Yes, a twin mattress topper should be totally fine, and I wouldn't worry about the thickness. I had 3 inch thick memory foam on top of my bed and just had regular XL sheets, which was totally fine. My sheets fit perfectly with room to spare.

Has anyone been able to use regular twin sheets (not XL) on the beds at Duke? I've heard that the mattresses are thin and even with an egg crate a regular twin fitted sheet will be ok. But I'd like to hear from others who have tried it.

Nope, nope, nope. Don't do it. Twin XL -- they stress that you need that size for a reason. It's not about how thick the mattress is -- regular sheets just won't stretch far enough down because the mattresses are too long.

EDITED because I have the maturity level of a 5 year old and I just couldn't leave "It's not about the thickness, it's about the length" up on here like I originally wrote.

because i have the maturity level of a 5 year old as well, i'm pretty much laughing out loud right now. we go to duke right?
