Maximum Transferable Units and Major Prerequisite

Hi everyone,

I applied as a transfer student for the fall 2008 term and so far I've been admitted to UCI, UCSB, and UCSD as a biology/biochemistry major (still waiting on Cal and UCLA >_<). I have completed the IGETC and currently have 60 transferable semester units but I plan on staying at a CCC for another year to complete genetics, organic chemistry, and physics. Now I have read somewhere that UCs will only give you a maximum of 70 units that will transfer over but the rest will just be given subject credits. My question is if I earn over 70 units at a CCC, will my major prerequisites still be counted towards my degree? I have been told by a friend that even if I complete all my prerequisites at a CCC I will still need to take some of them again after I transfer to ensure that I complete a certain amount of units at the UC.

I think the UC's allow up to 90 transferable units, but don't hold me to it. It varies between campuses.

The best way to find out is to call the UC and find out for sure. You don't want to get mixed info from the grapevine.

"The University will award graduation credit for up to 70 semester (105 quarter) units of transferable coursework from a community college, meaning those units will be counted toward completion of your degree. Courses in excess of 70 semester (105 quarter) units will not receive unit credit but will receive subject credit and may be used to satisfy University subject requirements.

Some campuses also limit the total number of transfer units that will be accepted. If your community college work is combined with credit from a four-year institution, different unit limits may apply. Please consult the Admissions Office at the UC campus that interests you."
