I did not fill out my FAFSA on time for the priority deadline at my school of March 1st for an incredibly stupid reason. I forgot there were only 28 days in February so I didn’t think it was March 1st already. When I was going to bed I realized and immediately filed it but it was too late. Was around 2am on March 2nd.
I get a merit scholarship and a need based grant from my school and both require renewals of FAFSAs (big chunk of money; 30k/58k), and also federal loans. I can’t believe I let this happen but I don’t know what I should do now.
I emailed my school’s financial services office, but I’m afraid they’re just going to tell me that funds will be given at an available basis aka I’m screwed.
Fill it out today if you haven’t yet. It depends on the school, but they may cut you some slack, especially because it sounds like you are already a student there.
Don’t quote me on this, but it is likely that your school has a FAFSA “deadline” for new incoming students so they can get timely award packages to make a decision on where to attend school. However, every school has different policies so this may not be universal. If you are truly concerned about it, I would stop by the office to confirm.
@dodgersmom yeah, was already disappointed in myself that I left something so important til so late, had to get it done.
I just stopped by the office and the guy told me my aid isn’t really federal based so I shouldn’t worry and that if my need is around the same my aid should also stay around the same.
Which is a bit confusing… whats the point of a priority deadline then? but ill take it.
The priority deadline is specifically for new incoming students, the school likely just doesn’t say this on the website. For example in CA, we list the deadline on our school’s website as it also coincides with the deadline for the Cal-Grant. Even though it doesn’t apply to continuing Cal-Grant recipients, it is better for students to complete the FAFSA earlier rather than later.
