maybe schools consider rank discouraging to students, but in reality at a school like UT rank matters, go to a private school not so much

Rank clearly matters for in-state students, but UT can’t tell high schools what to do. And I can guarantee that there are a number of ‘non-ranking high school’ students who get accepted at UT. My son did.

And I was not saying that rank is “discouraging to students”, but that it can be a misleading stat, unlike SAT/ACT scores which make for a more level playing field nationwide.

if you say so but i am pretty sure these private schools will estimate if the students are top 10 or top 25 otherwise , these students would have a 30% chance of getting in since like 70% is top 10

Some choose to do it that way where they give a broad percentile. Others do not. But I’m commenting on the fact that UT itself cannot estimate a class rank without getting information that I’m pretty sure the high school will not give.

im pretty sure they get some kind of information that helps them determine a rank, your school will probably just estimate or something

Admissions doesn’t estimate rank, as a matter of fact, they disregard non-ranking schools’ “estimated ranks”. Students from non-ranking schools (and home-schools) are reviewed holistically based on all the available info, like test scores, course rigor (that’s where all the school’s stats come into play), leadership, letters of rec., and essays.

For top 10% students applying to restricted majors, after 75% of slots are filled based on rank alone, the rest are admitted based on a holistic review.

Non-top 10% students are also reviewed holistically for the remaining in-state spots.

Public schools are not required to rank (at this time), but most do because of the Robert C Byrd and Texas Top 10% Scholarships and the exemption for the highest ranking grad.

Thank you zlc for confirming this.

if that was the case dont you think that every kid from private school would get in over a non top 10 at public? since their stats are probably better, but if you say so

^
Pierrechn.

We don’t say so. UT says so. Now stop propagating falsehoods in these forums.

Not every kid from private school would get in over a non top 10% student at public school. But many will, because they will be exceptionally strong students who would have easily been top 2-3% at public school. A lot of kids from my high school didn’t get in.

My high school specifically doesn’t rank as a response to UT’s admissions policy. No, they don’t go behind our backs and hand UT information like you are suggesting. The average SAT at my high school was about 30 points higher than UT’s average SAT. It didn’t make any sense to rank with a class of 75 kids.

Not every student has great stats at good private schools. A good percentage do, maybe 60%+. But there are plenty of dumb rich kids as well.

And yes, I don’t really like living in Austin and going to UT. Which is part of the reason why I’m leaving.

Good night.

ha all those kids who didnt get in should have switched out to public schools got in, then came back lol

^pierrechn: Look, we’re all sorry you got CAPd. You say you are probably going elsewhere because you don’t want to CAP. That’s fine if that’s what you want. But you seem to be obsessing about UT and the Top 10% rule/OOS students/McCombs etc. You talk a lot about everything at UT, but it’s all just starting to sound like sour grapes (for instance, you say “if you say so” to people frequently when you don’t have a rational argument). And you are disseminating a lot of misinformation, which is the real issue.

Nobody wants this to become personal and we really do all want the best for one another on this forum. We are thrilled for everyone’s successes and disappointed along with them when they get bad news. We want you to succeed, too. And you’ve been accepted at three good schools, so I have no doubt you will.

But I agree with navyarf.

im not mad i got CAPd lol , i applied to other schools i liked too, to tell you the truth the only reason i applied to UT was because i like their Football team! and I am going somewhere else CAP is for people who are obsessed with UT and will do anything to get their/ people forget that they want be their forever

Im not obsessing about what you just stated above, maybe its just the thread is on those topics?
but as far as that private school thing, check other threads other people have said what im saying, and its clearly stated on the site
