Hi I’m wondering if anyone with an insight as to how admissions and everything at McGill works could help me out and maybe give me their opinions as to what my chances might be. Also I have a few questions as to how race and A.P and Duel Enrollment courses play a part, if you guys could give me some feedback it would be very helpful so thank you very much!!!

Im an American High School student in Michigan.
8 A.P Courses gradés 10,11,12.
12 Duel Enrollment Crédits from grades 11,12
Unweighted GPA 3.3/ Weighted 3.7ish
My Sophome year was horrible at like a 2.4 GPA but my Junior and Senior Years were very well at a 4.0 unweighted each year and I’m womdering if my poor Sophomore year would hold me back for admissions into the Arts department even more so because the unweighted GPA is used. Also I’m an African American Student who comes from a low income school district and I’m wondering if that will go into play in any way and if there are by any chance a A.A population at McGill. Again thank you for your time and responses this whole process has been very stressful and sorry about the long post and it being everywhere.
McGill’s admissions are different than US schools’ admissions in that they’re much more straightforward and pretty much only look at grades. Here’s McGill’s minimum required grades: https://www.mcgill.ca/applying/files/applying/us_admission_standards_2018.pdf
I’m not sure how race plays into McGill’s admissions. However, I don’t know if your grades meet the requirements and I do not think race would give you a boost.
Race is irrelevant. For Americans it is UW GPA (grades 10-12) and SAT/ACT scores. Meeting the minima does not guarantee acceptance.
What is your SAT or ACT scores? Check the Arts minimas (above). Remember that only academic courses are used for the GPA calculation.
There is a place in the application where you can say that grades were impacted by events and they will consider that (Extenuating Circumstances). They will just want to see solid full first semester Senior Year grades from you. So make sure you keep grinding this semester. Best of luck!
-Race only makes a difference if you are a Native(First Nations) North American, but I’m not completely sure how much even there.
-Good SAT/ACT scores will help your cause.
- S1 found that good course rigor(AP's) will help pump up a lower GPA, but be aware that not all AP courses are regarded equally, i.e. BC Calc will be more highly regarded than AP CompSci.
- in general, EC's are not a thing for most Canadian schools.
- decisions for McGill are often disturbing late, especially for those with stats skirting the minimums. You will often be asked to supply academic updates well into the spring. Good news is that gives you time to work hard, and make a case that you are a good candidate on an upward trajectory.
