McGill Decisions Class of 2021 (entering 2017)

I’m a US High School student and I applied to the Faculty of Arts in December, just found out a few days ago that I was put on the waiting list.

My SAT scores are pretty mediocre and I was expecting a swift rejection, so this is actually kind of good for me. Should I be hopeful for admission now that I’m on the waitlist? For American schools it seems like barely anybody is ever accepted off of waitlists, so most articles say not to put any faith into it and just enroll in your second choice ASAP.

Is it the same for McGill? I’ve read a ton of threads on here about waitlisted students applying to McGill, and it seems like most of them were accepted sooner or later (By the dates on the posts, most got accepted in April). Some even said they were accepted only a few weeks after being waitlisted. But the letter I got from McGill says they wait until the May 1st deadline for most waitlisted students to get decisions, and it goes until literally the start of the semester. So confused, and there’s no data out there that I can find… Can someone offer some insight maybe?

I have a New SAT of 1510, 800 in SAT maths 2 and 690 in U.S. History, 3.98 GPA, and seven 5 of AP and still on the waitlist. Is it because I am a Chinese, or my scores are still not competitive enough. Do I still have any hope of being accepted?

Unlike the elite American private schools, McGill does not admit conciencious of race. The school does not actively seek out diversity, it just kind happens at McGill. All students are admitted based on merit and character…

Decision: Accepted into Faculty of Arts, Rejected from Faculty of Management

Stats:
SAT I: Reading & Writing 800; Math 710
SAT II: Math 1 740; U.S. History 790
GPA: 91.32 Weighted (School doesn’t provide unweighted)
3rd Decile
AP Scores: US History 5; Environmental Science 5
US High School

I’m honestly overjoyed at this moment. It seems that all this waiting was finally worth it. After being at Reviewed-Decision pending since January, I have finally gotten my decision. Assuming everything goes as expected, I think that this is where I will be going. To the others still waiting, have hope. The large amount of applications mean things may be slightly delayed, but they are starting to finally get through them.

Thank you to everyone here who has helped me, and good luck to everyone else!

@Rukoki I am just THRILLED for you! Honestly, given our previous exchanges I have been watching for this news from you. Though he got into Faculty of Arts in Jan./Feb., my S is still decision pending for Faculty of Management. I suspect that he won’t hear until LATE in the game…but that is OK. He gets his acceptance/rejection from Penn on Thursday and then it is decision time. My gut tells me that he will be at McGill in the Fall.

Again, congratulations. Well done!!!

@DiannaBishop @Castiel1999 how do you know if you’re waitlisted?

If I applied in early January when would I expect to be notified by McGill through Minerva?

@nervousgal Just check your application status on Minerva

Is anyone else still stuck on “Ready for Review”? (Faculty of Science)

@nuttyprofessor I am stuck on Further Review Required (Faculty of Arts and combined, Arts and Science) and everybody is giving me different reasons for it. The website says a document is missing (there is none missing), when I called the admissions office they said it’s just a display error and at the same time the office also wrote me an email saying it means the same as Decision pending.
When did you apply?

Mine also still says Ready for Review (Faculty of Science). Also, on the website it states that you cannot do this, however has anyone ever tried to or heard of someone changing faculties at this point? I’d like to switch one of my options to Arts. I don’t see the problem (since they haven’t reviewed my app yet) but has anyone had any experience with this?

@Rukoki Congratulations! So happy for you. I’ve been hanging in the RDP club with you since January and it gives me hope to see you get a spot. Well earned! Hope all else works out for you. Still RDP here, but better that than rejected. So I shall continue my daily trip to the Minerva, but now with some added hope.

@nuttyprofessor I too am stuck on Ready for Review. Applied to Faculty of Sciences on 22nd December.

@gam1300 Unfortunately there is no determined waiting time…I applied early October and I have not yet received any decision. It probably also depends on which school you applied to…(btw I applied to engineering). Good luck!

Do we receive an email for any changes in status?

@clemeverst yes, but only at 9 pm EST I think. So you can get accepted earlier in the day and not receive any email until the evening

I just wanted to share my experience with u guys cause i see how many of you are struggling right now…
I applied early january and i’ve sent all my missing documents before january 20th
a week ago i got a rejection letter from mcgill, which i told you about, and as I was in Montreal I called them in order to get an interview to change this decision
turned out there was a mistake, and I got in like 2min after the admission officer met me and even left the office with a scholarship because they saw in my file that I had excellent grades
Sometimes you don’t know how things really happened, and if i haven’t at least tried to discuss my case, i would have never known that there has been a mistake, and i would have never got in at the end of that
So i really recommend you to call them if you think your case is defendable (of course if you’re way under the minimum, that could be more difficult) cause you never know what could happen for you, and asking them an interview is definetely the best way for you to prove that you deserve your place too.
Also, there’s always someone ready to take your case (many people are reading the emails you send them, so there’s always gonna be someone that is gonna get interested about you if you know how to speak for yourself)
By the way, I applied for the faculty of arts and the interfaculty of arts and sciences, got rejected then accepted at both with a 3000$ scholarship, and I’m an international student taking the french baccalaureate in june if that may help you to know that

Plus i got stuck on further review required for about 2 and a half months and never got the “decision pending” status, so not all the application reviews are the same

Good luck for everyone!

@clemeverst no you don’t, you only get an email if you get a final decision, and the email comes a few hours after they send the decision to you through Minerva

@nuttyprofessor my checklist requirement is complete and it still changes to futher reviewed required and then back to reviewed decision pending. i hope i get an answer soon and hopefully its ACCEPTED!!

From what I’m hearing, the admissions process is pretty messy and disorganized this year; shameful representation from such a great institute.
