In all three colleges I have been accepted into their Biology program, I plan to get a M.D. through probably a U.S. Medical School. I have heard rumors circulating that it's harder to go to a U.S. Med school with a Canadian degree, I have also heard the opposite that since Mcgill/UBC are rather prestigious that I'll have a rather good chance. I was wondering what college would seem the best choice for wanting to go to med school in the future?

Are you a Canadian citizen, a US citizen/permanent resident, or are you dual-status?

If you are not a US citizen or legal permanent resident, it will be almost impossible for you to be admitted to Med School in the US. Of the few Med Schools that admit international applicants, many require that the full costs of all four years are paid up front.

If you are a US citizen or legal permanent resident, know that Medical School is obscenely expensive here and that there are almost no scholarships available. Most students pay for it entirely with loans. So the advice would be to choose the undergrad degree that will be cheapest for you and will leave you with the least debt. Med School admissions is primarily numbers based. Your GPA and your MCAT score will matter much much more than the name of the institution on your diploma. If that cheap-for-you institution is likely to result in a top GPA and good MCAT preparation, all the better.

^What she said about the citizenship/PR card is valid.

That being said, Canadian Med schools are way cheaper and equally good, though harder to get into. I know a kid at Harvard who’s planning on going to UofT med school. If you have top GPA/MCAT/EC, you should have some chance.

Is UW university of Washington? I don’t know if it’s really “prestigious”. Some medical schools have the stipulation that you attend UG in the US, so check for that.

I don’t think UBC has the same rep as McGill in the states (for whatever reason). If you do well at McGill, I bet you’ll have a good shot.

I have dual-status, so Mcgill/UBC would be relatively cheap, so GPA and MCAT is what matters for med-school? So i’d have a better chance if i went to an easier school to inflate my GPA and get good MCAT scores versus going to Mcgill which are really hard on grades??

If you are a dual citizen, the way to go would probably be a fully Canadian education followed by medical residencies here. This would save you a rather headspinning amount of money.
