Alright! Then are you eligible for a bilingual diploma or not? You should get a trilingual one! Do you remember how it works? (I got slapped on the hand a couple times for writing as if I'm sending a text message so now I'm making a point of using proper english.)

awesome, someone else who is studying both french and german at the same time

i actually don't think i can get a bilingual diploma, though. from what i have heard, you have to take two A languages in order for it to count as bilingual. that would be brilliant, though.

and yes, ian, french and german rock. which one have you found to be harder? german is quite a bit more difficult for me with all the cases and endings and whatnot!

umm, im not sure, german came really easily, im conversationally fluent at this point. the endings didnt matter much to me, because i really dont memorize in lists, rather i translate the word exactly into english, and then learn how to say stuff translated into literal english. i did a self study with german, and french i took one year in school, and i started learning again a month ago, my german is definatly much better. though i can say with all honesty, the german word to confuse me the most is auf

wow, that's a very interesting method you used to teach yourself german. how long have you been studying it? this is my 3rd year, and i would say i'm very conversationally fluent, too. the prepositions are most definitely confusing, much more so than french. i'm in my 7th year of studying, french, though, so thats probably why it's much easier for me.

I applied the college of Arts at Mcgill back in early November.

I got a 640 Math and a 650 Verbal.
650's on Writing, Math IC, US History
600 On biology (C'mon, it was freshman year haha.)

I have around a B+ average, like an 87-ish. Around a 3.7 in my school (Strange weighting system.)

I have a lot of extra curricular activities that are quite weird, but I know those won't get me into Mcgill. I have great grades in English, which is my intended field of study, along with French/Anything invovling east asia. (more stuff I wanna do.)

Do you think I have a chance or should I just expect a rejection letter.
And when should I expect that letter....

Thanks a bunch. Alex

hmm, i got serius about it 1 year ago. im convinced that the way schools teach it is almost worthless, unless you have a good program. the only way to learn is by emersion, by watching movies or listening to music, plus translating a news paper helps with the vocab. im a very literal person, and to know exactly how to literally say something is what i need. es tut mir leid, while yes it means im sorry, doesnt translate to that, i need to know what it translates to, sorry just a little rant., on a side note, what school do you go to, having read this mcgill forum is the first time i heard of the IB program, and it sounds so much better than my school, at least more intresting. i go to a public high school in new york, westchester to be specific

i can see how for some people, learning languages in school might not be effective. for me, this has never really been a problem. but then again, i was in vienna for 5 weeks over the summer, so that is where i picked up most of my german skills. and i agree with you on the literal thing. i always need to know the literal tranlations of expressions, too. it really helps with overall comprehension and fluency in the language. for your other question, i go to a public school in boulder, co.

ja, warum hast du nach Austria gegangen? ich wurde da los lieben, du glucklich , dinge, weiss ich dich gut nicht, so ich dir etwas noch namen kann. was immar.

es tut mir leid, ich habe niemend hier mitsprechen. nur zwie wissen deutcher. sorry, i have no one to speak german with, only two know it.

tum log kya bolrahay ho mujhe kuch samaj nahi araha!!

and buggzz, your german is very good, and if they can jabber on in french, why not us in german

Ian: if they can jabber on in french, why not us in german

Noelle: notice that no one's stopping you ;) hehe. This is a very...multicultural thread.

Anyone want to join me in speaking elvish? thought not.
takes nerd glasses off

teehee
yes that was a major hi-jack of the thread

lol, i joke joke, i meant it in a joking tone, oh man elvish? someone has read the lord of the rings.

I realized that it was a joke, why else would I have attached a ;) to the end?

haha, you rock, ian.

you all seem like a lot of fun and I sincerely hope each and every one of you gets admitted to McGill, whether or not you choose to attend.

Btw, are there any slackers here that have still not completed their app? (like I was...I sent mine in the night of Jan. 14th. haha!.

And yes, I have read LOTR too often. As well as The Silmarillion, Lost tales 1 and 2, Unfinished tales, and several of Tolkien's other short books (Farmer Giles of Ham, etc). If you're interested in studying the language, http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/ . I'm a bit out of practice...haven't had much time this year to study anything that wasn't being graded ;)

no no no, french and german are enough for me, though i got a friend that knows it, ill look at it just for fun, oh and thanks for the compliment, i more roll, as in down the the mountain, skiing fun!
