Well, I agree that it's for an "achievement," but I tend to think that they only give those out to people who both have good achievements and good fit. Acadec, you might not have discussed that passion that much (I mean, I didn't trumpet my passion either), but I'm sure you had ECs to back it up (plus your teachers probably talked about it for you).

Here's what collegeboard says about it: "McKenna Achievement Award: $10,000; based on strong academic record and outstanding leadership and involvement; 30 awarded, renewable for total of 4 years."

am I the only one who received a "rejection letter" for the McKenna/Seaver awards? ..... basically did anyone hear anything about it other than those who got it?

hi! i'm a finalist for both scholarships, and would also debate that demonstrating an interest in economics/politics etc. in an application necessarily cinched the "finalist" status for anyone...well, at least it definitely didn't for me! my major is undecided and in my application i wrote a lot about art....my analytical essay was on keith haring, i wrote about jackson pollock in my article of clothing one, and i said i'd take van gogh to lunch.

but anyway, i'm looking forward to meeting you all next month :)

I doubt that demonstrating interest in politics/econ was the defining quality that they were looking for. While it is primarily full of gov/econ majors, the school has plenty of other departments. I'm sure they're looking for some top students in other subjects to pump up their less popular majors.

Just for reference, I wasn't trying to say that because I put down econ or polisci I got the award. "Fit" is not about major choice. Fit is about how you match with the goals of the college, not only with the overall atmosphere, but also with personal qualities like leadership.

Anyways, I'm pretty revved up for the McKenna Achievement Weekend!!

I think you'd have to totally bomb your mid-year report.

After all, why would they fly you to Claremont at their expense, just so they could reject you? While there will be a few people who go to McKenna weekend and do not receive a scholarship, the main intent of the weekend is to try and impress the best applicants.

I got a scholarship rejection letter too. I was expecting it so it wasn't a big blow...but it would've been nice to be surprised.
So, yes, others are getting rejection letters.

Is any official schedule for this program available yet? (especially for the Seaver interviews)

The travel agent e-mailed me (with 17-ish other seniors' e-mail addresses in the "To" line... we need to work on the art of the blind carbon copy :-p ), but I don't even have a temporary flight itinerary yet. Edit: Belay that. I'm getting in at noon on Saturday and leaving at... 11:30 Monday night. Oi.

ethanrt- i got the same e-mail...and my flight home sucks too. i fly back on a red-eye with a stop in phoenix, az and don't get home until 5:30 am on tuesday.

Consider yourself lucky - I get back at 9:30 a.m. EST, with a VERY brief layover in between (the kind where you run from one terminal to the other) hitsheadtodesk

That being said, I'm actually pretty excited about one thing: I'm going to set an alarm for myself on my Georgia-CT flight so that I can see the sun rise.

Oh, and beccareful: I hope that these itineraries take Daylight Savings Time into account... it gets hilarious but confusing when you have an AZ layover, as you will see ;-) "It's 12:30 A.M. on Tuesday... no wait, it's 11:30 P.M. on Monday... no, it's Tuesday again..." grins Have fun with that.
