MD/MBA Joint Program

MD/MBA Joint Degree - MBA - Harvard Business School
Joint & Dual Degrees: MBA Program: Stanford GSB
Dartmouth Medical School - MD/MBA Program at Dartmouth

My son is interested in MD/MBA Joint Program.
He is interested both in health care and also being a surgeon.
Now he is a sophomore and preparing for medical schools.

Q1.
Depending on people and what career he/she chooses,
but is it worth to spend another 1 or 2 yrs to study business ?

Q2.
In case if he changes his mind from health care to a doctor,
is it not difficult to be a doctor ?
After the Joint Program, does he need just getting a medical license ?

Q3.
School says that applicants apply to medical school and business school
separately and must be admitted independently.

So he might need more energy and time commitment to prepare for both schools.
also during 5 or 6yrs should the studying be more demanding and
challenging compared to medical school ??

Q4. What are the typical careers for the Joint Program ?

As a parent, I don't know anything about the Joint Program and
don't know which advise I should give him.
And I also a bit worry about whether his decision is right or wrong now
and in the future.

Any comments will be appreciated.

1.) Basically, it depends on what he wants to do. If he might want to become an administrator someday, the extra year may be worth it. If he’s sure that all he ever wants to be is a physician, it’s usually not worth it.

2.) It’ll be tough to go back if, immediately after medical school, he chooses not to do a residency. That is usually not how these programs work. So usually he’ll be fine.

3.) He should prepare for medical school. Once he’s done three+ years there, the business school will usually be pretty accommodating.

4.) I have no idea.

An MD/MBA degree graduate can work in Hospital Administration (CEO of a Major Hospital = $$$$$).
