Meal plan questions

Which meals aren't covered? I'm assuming they don't cover weekends and breaks. I know I won' have much spending money, so I want to know exactly what meals are provided with the meal plan.

For a dining hall plan, which essentially all freshmen will have, you get a choice of three different options. One gives you 19 meals a week, one gives you 14 a week plus Cardinal Dollars (aka points), which can be used at places like Late Night and a few others around campus. The third option is 10 meals a week and more points.

You can use your allotted meals on whichever meals you want. Dining halls serve three meals a day on weekdays, and brunch and dinner on weekends (hence the 19-a-week plan covers every single meal). Breaks are not covered. You can't carry over meals from one week to the next, although we've been trying to get that changed. Points are good for the entire quarter, though. You can use your meal plan at ANY dining hall on campus.

The assumption is that you'll get 19 a week if you want to eat every meal, 14 if you don't eat breakfast, and 10 if you plan on skipping a lot of meals or fending for yourself a lot. But like I said, you're free to use your meals however you want.

Oh, and you can change your plan at the beginning of each quarter, so you're not locked in for the full year. I think you even get a chance to change in the first couple of weeks of fall quarter.

On a side note, eating clubs (Toyon and Suites) and row houses don't work the same way, but you won't be living there until at least sophomore year.

also, some dining halls are closed fridays/ saturdays - i.e. flomo. so u won't be able to get food in-dorm but wilbur, stern and lagunita are always open so...go there! i personally am a big fan of lagunita...they have make your own fruit smoothies for breakfast and juice your own carrots/celery/oranges/whatever and make ur own sandwiches for lunch. flomo is pretty sad. :(

and really, breaks aren't covered? I was under the impression that they were. my friend who lives on the row borrowed my card so he could eat at Wilbur during Thanksgiving break...

Ok, thanks for the helpful info!

When do we get to choose our meal plan? Which meal plans are covered by fin-aid?

i guess all the meal plans cost the same, so you can choose any if you are on finaid.

So you're choosing Stanford over Yale, then?

Actually, some meals do roll over from one week to the next. If you have 14 meals per week and don't use them all, I think that 2 of them roll over. I'm not sure about the number. If you have 19 meals, though, there's no point in having the meals roll over, so they don't :)

I believe the dining halls were open over Thanksgiving break, but not over Spring break >:O

yeah, i too remember reading that meals can now be rolled over!

they all cost the same? that sounds unlikely. can anyone comment on the cost of each?
