Meal Plan

Which college meal plan is great for a freshman- 10 meals/wk or 14 meals/wk? I've heard some people say that the 14 meal/wk is a waste of money. Is this true?

I started out with 14 meals/wk and ended up downgrading to 10 per week. I either had early class or didn’t wake up early enough for breakfast in the dining hall and I used my BRBs for lunch b/c I usually ate at Trillium or Statler. The 10 meals worked out fine for me – I had dinner each night and brunch on the weekends. I didn’t even come close to running out of BRBs.

I recommend starting with 10 meals per week and see if it works for you. You can upgrade your meal plan at anytime during the year, but you can only downgrade during the first few weeks of the semester.

Depends on your eating habits. If you always eat lunch and dinner or exercise frequently, I would recommend sticking with the 14/week.

It really depends on your schedule. First semester I didn’t have time for lunch in the dining hall so I dropped to 10 meals a week. However, this semester I had time for lunch every day so I upgraded to 14. I personally like 14 meals, because you can always eat with friends and I really enjoy going to Risley for lunch and doing work. It really depends on your preferences.

Is the unlimited one a waste of money? Where do you get your remaining 7 meals?

I would say unlimited is a bit of a waste. Risley is closed on the weekends so I go there for lunch during the week and usually RPCC for dinner. Sometimes I go with friends to West for dinner because its a lot better.

I chose 14 meals/week as well. I think I might be eating more now that my parents aren’t cooking (not that I hate my parent’s food). The new variety of food, plus the diversity of people, might get me to try new things.

Why not try 14/week first? If you eat more, you can upgrade. If not, downgrade. 14 seems like a good starting point.

would start @ 7 or 10- can always go up; opportunity to go down passes VERY quickly

@Saugus - unless you plan to eat 4+ meals a day, the unlimited plan is usually a waste. Dining halls are open for 3 meals a day M-F, and 2 on weekends (brunch and dinner). That said, if you’re on the 14 meal plan, and want your 7 other meals a week, the dining plans come with BRBs (like dining debit dollars) - which you can use to buy meals and snacks at a la carte locations around campus.
