Meal Plans

Can a current student please explain the difference between the 230 and 280 meal plans, and what a decline is? I've read all the papers and I'm a little confused. Thanks.

I felt confused as well. But in the end, I picked the 230 meal plans, simply because it's cheaper, and 14 meals per week is enough for me.

How much does the 230 and 280 plans cost?

i am a current UR student and from experience you definately want the 230. both are way more than enough and you will still find yourself eager to use what you have left at the end. You will be allowed to change to a 170 plan for the second semester which everyone i know changed to because of the excess of the two higher plans. I hope this helps.

Yes 230 230 230. The only time you ever use 270 is if your an football player and you eat a lot. There's no way you can finish 270 without wasting it on...idk...10 slices of cheese cake...3 large pizzas...and 28 smoothies.

Never get the 270! And switch to 170 second semester becuase even 230 is a bit heavy...

yeah. that's what everyone said when i was there as well. they were so eager to get rid of their excess food, they kept asking us if we wanted to buy something else. and eeeevery college student will tell u that u should get the smaller meal plan.

I finished with 230 both semesters... I am glad that I did not have 170 or 270 either semester...

Are you guys that cheap? The difference between 230 and 280 is $200 a semester. People normally eat 21 meals a week, so I don't see how 17 is so much that you can't eat it all.

you kind of grow into a new habit of not waking up for breakfast and after awhile you get sick of campus food and you order out with a group of people so you end up eating less than 17 meals from the school a week.

I'm going with the 280 first semester. If I have time to start eating out a lot I'll go with something else after that.

Ah....A warning!

YOu can't change meal plans after....2 weeks into classes or whenever late registration closes, your stuck with your meal plan.

They're very finicky about when you can change meal plans. IN fact you have two weeks in November to change your meal plan for the spring semester and a week in january (late...with 25$ fee) to change it then. But anytime outside of that, you have no choice but to eat what you selected. So do be careful becuase a lot people end up with rediculous amounts of clubs left over.

As a personal anacdote, my fall semester i picked 280 thinking it would work out, but if I continued eating at the pace I was eating in november. I would have....120 clubs left over. And I made decision to increase my club consumption to 5-6 clubs a day in order make up for 2 months of 2 clubs a day.

Oh, I "wasted" about 2 clubs a day on things that are probobly better off declining (such as Smoothies w/ muffins...cheaper to decline...or just a sandwhich with drink)

Actually this problem is more noticible if you live on the quad becuase your motivation to go to Wilson or Douglass is very low in some days (i.e. rainy / snowstorm / cold / windy / before finals). On the other hand the 280 club plan was less of a problem for those who lived in Sue B. becuase they have easy access to a cafe and a cafeteria. But still a problem...no one really eats breakfast....

hmmm.... the real question, then, states as self as such, at least for me... what's more likely - that i will get rid of my habit to wake up at 8-9, even after going to bed at 1 am, as well as eating breakfast, or that i won't. because if i won't (and i've been trying hard for the last year), i might need the 280.

I meant I would change second semester. The general consensus on the 2010 forums though is that even the 230 is a lot. Here's a question though, is the 230 enough if you eat breakfast everyday? Thanks.

cant you just use the clubmeals for lunch/dinner, and use ur $400 declining towards breakfast? ( breakfast is prob only like $3-$5)

No, won't work... hehe :)
Trust me... I had breakfast (not in my room) 2 days a week and had 2 other meals per day and had 1 club left in the end... (As well as 47 cents decling with 2 weeks to go...)

So hopkinslax would you recommend the 280 for people who eat breakfast?

The concern isn't just breakfast, the real question is are you really going to club 3 meals a day with university food? You really do get sick of it quite fast.

that is, indeed, a valid point. i went to penn for a summer last year, and i got sick of the campus food in less than a month (now, granted, we were only allowed to use one of the dining halls, but, after trying them out this year, i realize it wouldn't have mattered). sure, penn isn't rochester, but i think u get an idea of just how quickly u won't want campus food anymore

interesting discussion we're having here. maybe i should have waited a bit more before sending in my contract?

There's always late change in case you really don't think you can finish it (you get the differance back between hte meal plans with a 25$ late fee penalty)

But as a freshman, what else would I do for breakfast besides cereal or something in my room?
