So i was wondering if anyone else received a Rensselae Medal. I'm kinda worried all of a sudden cause i thought the medal ensured that u were getting accepted into the school and that the scholarship was definite. however, i kno someone who received the medal and then got rejected in the early decision process. What is the deal with that?

Receiving the Rensselaer Medal does NOT ensure admission. The school will still look at your GPA, test scores, extra-curriculars, etc. (just like they do with everyone else who applies) before making that decision.

It is my understanding, however, that if you are accepted by RPI, the scholarship then comes automatically if you are a Medal winner.

No, not everyone who gets the medal gets accepted. Somewhere on the website, I believe, it mentions that about 80% of the medal winners get accepted, not ALL of them though. However, as stated above, if you are admitted you automatically get the scholarship. Although the award is supposed to go to the best math and science student in the junior class, some schools don't necessarily follow that policy and they give it to whoever, so some people who receive the medal aren't necessarily qualified to receive it. It all depends on how the school sees it fit to give away the award.

At my son's school, the Medal award is given to the person ranked #2 in the class. No other consideration of anyone else's qualifications. The past few years, I don't think the Medal winners even applied to RPI, so you'd think the school would widen their consideration of who gets the Medal. Can you tell I'm somewhat bitter about this (my son was not quite #2)?

hey thanx everyone i understand now, cuz i was kinda weirded out cuz i m not the student with the highest GPA's in those subject areas so now it makes a lot more sense, too bad i already applied to RPI as a safety, lol

does the person you know who got rejected ED despite the medal live in scarsdale by any chance?

Hmm. I applied RPI b/c of $15000 per year. i hope i get in.

yea he does, u know him?

yes.

tom lemler? i don't think he would have liked that school very much though so i guess it was for the best.

yea i guess, its kinda hilarious though how small the world is rite? i met him a long time ago at a party in eastchester

i think it's scary how many westchester folk post here, heh.

i don't think we'd have coincidences like this with any other county...

i received the medal..got in..but i really dont think i want to go..why do u guys want to go to rpi?

haha actually i just got accepted too and i dont wanna go neither, i jus got the medal- so y not apply if theyre offering u all that money? but reasons i dont want to go to RPI is cuz its upstate NY in the middle of effin nowhere and does not have as good biology courses as other schools im applying to
