Medical School Chemistry, Bio, Stats, and Physics Requirements

First of all, hello and I have to say I’m surprised a website like this one has a forum for Michigan—I thought it was an Ivy League-oriented website! :)

I am a second-year college student here and I’ve recently decided to pursue a career in medicine after a great deal of self-reflection.

Apparently, I won’t be able to communicate with a pre-med advisor since I’m sort of “late in the game” and because it’s hard to schedule an appointment with one as of now. I will not be able to contact one until possibly next semester or, more likely, the beginning of next year when most of the pre-meds drop out to find their real passions or because of Orgo 2 or something, so I would appreciate your guys’ help.

I’m a double major in Biochemistry and I decided to switch from Pure Mathematics (I didn’t look forward to taking topology or geometry classes anyway…) to Mathematical Sciences with a sub-concentration in Mathematical Biology.

I know medical schools want to see a year of inorganic/general chemistry with lab, but I used AP credit for that course. The UMich pre-med advising website (Required Courses) doesn’t say much about using AP chemistry credit for the course and only advises to take CHEM 260 or CHEM 230 (only semester of general chemistry without a lab???).

So in my freshman year first term I took: CHEM 210/211 and then I took CHEM 215/216 next term and did well in the classes and labs (As in 210, 211, and 216, A- in 215).

This term I am in CHEM 260 and CHEM 303 (I love 303!!! :D) and will probably ace them both if I don’t screw up the final exam. That’s a year of inorganic chemistry right?

But what I’m worried about is the lab requirement. Next term I’m taking CHEM 351/352 and I’m planning to take CHEM 451 junior year 1st term, CHEM 452 junior year 2nd term, and then CHEM 453 and CHEM 454 my last two terms at UMich. This will give me my biochemistry major, but the only lab I’m taking is CHEM 352. Does that serve the inorganic chemistry lab requirement for med schools? Or should I take a class like CHEM 245/246/247 even though it’ll be hard to fit it in my schedule and if it won’t be necessary for my biochemistry major?

If you tested out of General Chemistry and are a pre-med, can you help me?

Also, which medical schools require statistics courses? Will MATH 525 “Probability Theory” and MATH 526 “Discrete State Stochastic Process” count? I mean, both of them are affiliated with the statistics department and I even think MATH 526 and STATS 526 is the same class. Will AP Statistics credit count for this requirement?

With biology, is it all right if my two biology lab credits for medical school are MCDB 429 and I take it my last term senior year and BIOLOGY 207 which I’m taking right now? Or should I take BIOLOGY 226 with 225 next term (I was only planning on taking 225 without 226)?

Finally, do you recommend the PHYSICS 135/136/235/236 sequence or the 140/141/240/241 sequence? My Biochem and Math advisers are fine with either and both can be used for my majors.

I forgot to ask:

Do you know if MATH/STATS 525 can act as a prerequisite for STATS 426 since MATH/STATS 525 is an advanced version of MATH/STATS 425? Should I contact the stats department?

I’ve spoken to the stats department and MATH 525 can work as a prereq for STATS 426 and for STATS 449, which I might take.

Anyways, I know finals are coming up, but isn’t there anyone here who can help a fellow wolverine?

Thanks. :)

[Required Courses](http://www.lsa.umich.edu/advising/academicplanning/prehealth/requiredcourses)

This should answer most of your questions

Thanks for your reply, but I’ve already looked at that link.

Anyways, I’ve looked up my answers for the Stats, psychology, and biology questions, but I’m still worried about the chemistry lab requirement.

Medical schools need a year of inorganic or “other” chemistry. I’m taking more than that (CHEM 260, CHEM 303, CHEM 451, CHEM 452). Problem is that none of them have any corresponding lab courses. They technically have labs within the courses, but the labs are not delineated with a different course credit. So I’m wondering whether those classes could count for the lab requirement. If not, would a biochem lab be sufficient for the requirement?

Also, why is it that UMich’s required course page tell AP Chem Credit-users to take only 1 semester of inorganic/other chemistry (CHEM 260 or 230)? For someone who does not have AP Chemistry credit, that makes sense, but for someone who does, it’s a semester of a class and a lab course less than the requirement. Does UMich do something special for these premeds when it comes time to apply?

Thank you.

So medical schools usually require a year of inorganic chem lab. If you used AP credit for gen chem, your transcript should show Chem 125 and 126, which is two semesters of gen chem lab. If I recall correctly, the LSA pre-health advisers say that most schools are ok with 125/126 via AP, some want a letter of explanation from someone (LSA? chem?) which isn’t a big deal, and maybe one or two schools won’t be happy about it.

we have a mixture of liquid nitrogen and oxygen in a container, can we separat with the help of a stable magnet ?if yes,can we take the oxygen and nitrogen in 2 containers ?if not ,what we have to change to do this work,to take nitrogen in a container and oxygen in another, that is my question guys,if someone can help me…thank you very much,
