Hi all, I'm a high school senior, entering college in the fall, and I have a few questions regarding entering medical school.

I don't plan on entering a premed program or applying to an early assurance program. I plan on majoring in engineering as an undergraduate. My question is: Is it still possible for me to enter medical school and become some kind of doctor if I don't do a premed program but maybe take a few medical related classes such as biology? Would it still possible for me to be a surgeon without having taken any premed classes? Is that common or rare?

However, my subjective opinion is that, although it is not always so, those who are into engineering tend to not like medicine-related subjects/ECs. But this may be my bias (as an engineer.)

You don’t have to be in a premed program in the sense that you can major in anything and still apply to Med school.

You need to go to Med school to be a surgeon, and you have to take premed coursework to enter Med school.

You may be confused.

You can be an engineering major…that’s fine. My engineering major son is pre-med.

However, YOU HAVE to also take the pre-med pre-reqs. That’s NO BIG DEAL for an eng’g major since many of the classes are req’ts ANYWAY for engineering! :)

There isn’t a “pre med program” in a way that I think you think there is. It’s not a major or anything like that.

Pre-meds have to take…

one year of bio
one year of chem
one year of OChem
one year of physics
math/Calculus/stats (this isn’t finite)

many of those above classes are req’d for engineers ANYWAY…you may just have to add the Ochem or the Bio. Physics and Gen Chem are often req’d for engineers…and certainly the math is.

To apply to med school, you have to have the pre-reqs…but you can still have eng’g as your major.

The content of the MCAT will be changing starting Jan 2015 and it’s quite likely that pre-med requirements will change to better match the new content. You will need to stay in contact with the health advisor at your college to see how you will be affected.
