We purchased a Serta icomfort gel infused memory foam king bed 2 years ago. It is the Savant. It was our first memory foam. For the first 7 months it was incredible. Our backs stopped hurting, I didn’t have to go to my acupuncturist anymore. I actually looked forward to going to bed. We paid $2,500 for this bed. After about 7 months it started to lose support, so I flipped it around constantly, even rotating 90 degrees, not just 180.
It is just too squishy now, there is no support. My back is hurting now like before and I am so angry. They say it’s not defective unless there is at least an inch depression. Well, memory foam retains its shape…there is no depression. I don’t think I have any recourse. We purchased it from Kittles, a huge furniture store. Has anyone had any luck complaining about a bed after 2 years. DH and I are normal size.
So…the next time we purchase a bed, I’m hesitant to spend that kind of money…also hesitant with memory foam in general now. So what to do? Regular firm spring and purchase a nice memory foam topper that can be changed frequently. Anyone but a tempurpedic or sleep number? What does that feel like since it’s basically air?
Ouch! In more ways than one…I had problems with my back until I got a Serta 4 in. memory foam topper. I’ve had it 5 years now and just love it. Much cheaper than a whole mattress, which is still good. My sister had degenerative discs and is in pain often, but loves her Sleep number bed. She says it’s the only way she can sleep without medication.
We have a sleep number with their memory foam top layer. I love it. DH had to get the cooling mattress protector for his side but still likes it. We got the adjustable/motion feature but wouldn’t again. We don’t want to adjust the whole bed while the other person is sleeping (didn’t want two different mattresses with individual controls). The motion thing is WAAAY to noisy, we never use it.
Got my Tempur-Pedic 11 years ago. It is still perfect. I love it! It was H’s idea–I couldn’t see spending that much for a mattress, but I’m SO glad we did.
Well you are all encouraging…sounds like all 3 ways are good. The moral of the story is don’t but the serta icomfort. I wonder if the gel infusion is what causes it to lose support unlike the tempurpedic.
We got our tempurpedic in 2004. Still love it…and it’s still form enough. We bought the foundation and the mattress. I know folks who had trouble who bought the mattresses only…and either used an older foundation or a platform bed.
If you are buying these beds…get the matching foundation.
At the risk of sounding like a nut, there something about sleeping on memory foam or gel that concerns me. Knowing what they are made of chemical-wise, I just can’t get comfortable with spending as much as a third of my life in such close proximity.
But, I’m a luddite that used cloth diapers for my kids rather than gel filled disposable diapers.
@doschicos I am right there with you. And I can’t remember if their is latex in these types of mattresses. I definitely do not want latex in my mattress
As to the OP, I find the idea of mattress shopping awful. There is no way to compare apples to apples.
There are plenty of “chemicals” in the conventional coil mattresses… Unless you buy one of those $10K cashmere-filled, all cotton covered contraptions.
the chemicals used in mattresses is beyond scary. I listened to a talk radio show one time some guy from a chemical lobby or something…said “some” no actual number of people are saved every year because the chemicals prevent people who fall asleep smoking from burning their bed and house down.
meanwhile millions and millions of people are exposed to noxious toxic chemicals inhaling them all night long . I would by an organic mattress if you can afford one!
What type of mattress is the “coolest”, temperature wise? Have a nearly 6 yr. old Serta innerspring with a narrow top layer of foam and fiber. It is comfortable, but very warm.
Tempurpedic has an feature on some of their models called TempurBreeze that is supposed to keep the mattress cool. I didn’t opt for it because it was more expensive and we’ve never been bothered by the temperature of our old Tempurpedic.
Buying a new mattress probably generates a strong placebo effect, which typically wears off - it might not be the mattress. We recently purchased a relatively cheap mattress to put on a platform bed, replacing the original mattress on that bed that was purchased 35 years ago!
Mattress shopping is really hard IMO. Who really feels that comfortable lying down in front of strangers ?
We bought a tempurpedic years ago through Brookstone and it just didn’t work out for us. They took it back and gave us a full refund .
I’d love to see some seriously scientific studies about what people think are good mattresses. For example, have 50 people sleep on Mattress A and 50 people sleep on Mattress B for two weeks, then exchange the mattresses and have the people rate their sleep on each. I wonder if the mattress really makes any difference in peoples’ perception of their sleep.
ETA: Especially if you told people that one mattress cost way more than the other!!
