Memory foam beds, sleep number beds....

Yes, we had a temperpedic and got rid of it after a year and a half, just awful. We’re back to an old back up mattress which needs to go. We also have an issue getting a king up the stairs and this one got ruined when we brought it up, so now shopping as well. Lots of friends are swearing by the sleep number, but they’re so darn expensive, I just don’t know! Also, I think we’ll need to get two twins - so they will need to fit together nicely.

@surfcity …thanks. What does your friend say about a Temperpedics? DH is about 155 and I weigh 135…on a good day

@conmama – didn’t the Serta mattress come with a warranty? Having a $2300 mattress break down within 8 months is ridiculous.

PS I just googled and it looks like the problem you described is covered by Serta’s gel mattress warranties. But you better act quickly to make a claim.

We got our bed from Costco. It was much cheaper than prices I’ve seen on this thread-- I think about $600 or less. My nephews helped bring it into our house and bedroom for us. It works for us. We are both about 135/140 pounds and I don’t feel much when H shifts position and it’s just a full size bed. I still like it pretty well but H says we need a new one. We’ve had it for several years already.

D has a bed that is soft as a cloud but also firm. It’s a pillow top twin bed. She’s only 100 poiunds and it’s now way over a decade old and as good as new. We bought it from a futon store tho it isn’t a futon.

I just got something from Costco that indicates they will have some Temper-pedic beds until Jan 16th. It says limited availability, so if anyone is interested you may need to act fast.

Our new Costco Tempur mattress is about a year old. It was our Christmas gift to us last year - to replace the first Tempur that was almost 16 years old. We dragged it upstairs all by ourselves using the push-pull method, then took the plastic off (setup was included with delivery, but our bed needed a little modification, so I told the guys that we would handle it)… Mr. complained that it was a bit hard at first, but got used to it quickly. He comes home from business trips and sleeps like a log! He jokes that he misses the mattress more than me when he is on the road.

The most recent consumer reports has ratings on bedding. Costco comes out near the top. Tempurpedic comes out near the bottom.

We had ONE pillow top mattress. Never again. The pillow top part really got very bad. Latest purchase was a great mattress made in CT here…medium firm…just right. Bought from the sleepys crooks…but now they are Mattress Firm.

I hate shopping for mattresses. The sales people are worse than used car sales people!

If you read the link posted up the thread, it says that CR does not have the right tools to test foam mattresses…

I totally love my tempurpedic! Love it. And I would get another.

I loved our Costco mattress shopping experience. A few clicks, and we bought it - sight unseen. No pressure no sharks. We knew that if it was not good enough, we could load it up in our truck and drive a few miles to the nearby store to return.

We chose Sleep Number based on the recent Consumer Reports rating. After about 60 days, we are still happy.

Anyone with Sleep number for more than a year?

The one drawback from buying at Costco was we couldn’t lie on it to know what it felt like before buying. Also, it feels too hot to me from the foam, so I have to have two beach towels on top of the mattress, under the mattress pad and sheets to be comfortable.

We’ve had our sleep number bed for about 10-11 months. It’s an adjustable split king. I love it. We laughed about buying an “old-people” bed, but the adjustable feature is nice. I have it raised slightly to help with snoring and was able to raise it higher to help when I had a bad cold last month.
My major complaint is that with a footboard on our bed it is a pain to change the sheets.

Our other place has a standard mattress. I’ve found it hard to get used to. I came home yesterday and last night slept 10 hours.

I’ve been perfectly happy with our temperpedic. We’ve only had it a couple of months, but we both like it.

I doubt ours is under warranty anymore at over 3 years. Plus, they send someone out to measure the sag. Yeah, right. Let’s see…memory foam bounces back to almost level with no weight. Now, if they put a 10 lb ball in the middle and another where I sleep…then they would see the depression and breakdown. They know that, so they won’t cover it like that.

One important note about Tempur mattresses: they are designed to work on Euro-style platform beds, not on typical US boxsprings. If your bed is not a platform bed, get the Tempur set that has their special box, not just a mattress. It does make a difference. We tried to save with our first Tempur and got just the mattress. After a couple of weeks, off to Lowe’s we went to get some sturdy plywood to transform our bed into a platform bed.

Most mattresses come with 10-year warranties, with almost all having at least five-year, and some up to 20 (though there might be charges after a certain time). If it were my $2300, I’d at least look into it.

I personally cannot stand foam based mattresses because I hate the feeling of sinking into the foam.

Our new Tempur does not have that sinking feeling. It is quite firm. I just checked - Costco has sets on their site; the most expensive set is $2,300.

Tempurpedic platform is a must. We have it on ours…it sort of works like the old box spring…it’s a platform under the mattress. Tempurpedic won’t honor guarantees without the foundation also.
