I got $38,000 a year for OOS with a 1580 SAT and 4.5 GPA. I also got into the Scholars/Honors Program. Super excited for next year. Miami is definitely one of my top choices!
zoo225 and LookingForHelp1, congratulations on your awards from Miami, those are outstanding! My son received a $22,000 out of state award, and we are very grateful, as Miami is a top choice for him, his top choice if all other things are equal. The challenge he faces is he has received full awards at two other good schools. We do have some questions, not sure if anyone know, but I thought I would ask here. First, he was accepted to the Honors Programs, and I was curious if students can be accepted into both the Honors Programs as well as UASP? He sees both programs as having wonderful opportunities, and we were wondering if a UASP invitation might come later in the process (for example what if other UASP recipients do not choose Miami). Also, his merit award letter states he will get an official letter on March 1, with scholarships totaling at least $22,000. Wondering if that merit award amount ever increases between now and when the official award letter is sent.
For reference, he has a 35 ACT, 3.85uw, 4.3w, many AP and dual enrollment classes, varsity soccer at a high level, and good volunteers/ECs. We are very grateful for the award from Miami, as it is such a good school, and seems like a really good fit for him.
Any other advice is welcome thank you!!!
@TheGratefulDad Congrats on your son’s merit award! I have 2 Ds at Miami - freshman and junior, so I might be able to help a bit. Yes - it is possible to be accepted into both honors and scholars. My younger D was invited to honors in her original acceptance portal letter and to scholars (Global Studies) at the beginning of February. I would assume scholar invites vary widely by program. No idea how often my Ds scenario occurs. She did tell me that many of the students in her scholars cohort are also in honors, but many of her honors friends are not in scholars.
For merit awards, my D received her initial merit letter at the end of December and an updated letter at the end of January. We were pleasantly surprised to find that her updated letter included an Arts and Sciences Dean’s Scholarship that was in addition to her original merit package. She was notified a few days later of her Scholars invite which added additional money to her merit package. My older Ds merit package did not increase from her original letter.
Best of luck to your son!
@Violinviolamom Thank you for your experience. My son received his merit award and we were very pleased. He received $12,000 instate. I believe he applied to honors and scholars but at this point has only been accepted to honors. I had been wondering if the scholars invites vary by program and there still might be a chance that he would be admitted. So you have answered my question. I bet that was a wonderful surprise for your daughter to see her merit increase. My son’s number one job now is to decide if he will attend Miami or OU as he also received a very generous offer there.
@Violinviolamom What do your daughters need to do to maintain there scholarship? Do they have to have a certain GPA? Thanks.
@Heiditree The university merit scholarships and Arts and Sciences Deans scholarships require a 3.0 cumulative gpa. Both Ds also participated in the Miami Bridges program which requires a 2.5 to maintain that scholarship. My older D also has a music scholarship which I believe requires a 3.0. Your son will receive a financial aid letter that lists the requirements for his scholarships. I believe the university reviews academic eligibility at the end of each spring semester.
Do I have to send my FAFSA to get merit aid?
@caralhoman No you don’t need to send FAFSA. At least not to get the offer, my son has not sent his FAFSA and he got a merit offer.
@Heiditree Dang, I didn’t see any offers last time I checked… I’ll go check again! Thanks! Where did you find this? Sorry to bother you…
EDIT: I can’t seem to find anything on my Applicant Status Page, except the accepted letter. I’m pretty sure they would give me some money though, cause my SAT is 1400+…
I just got my merit award today, in New Jersey. At least $24,000 a year. 1550 SAT, 4.5 weighted GPA with all APs, Honors, and Dual Enrollment course, very high leadership positions in nationally-ranked clubs and activities, prestigious summer program. Also was admitted into Honors and Scholars programs.
My Indiana son’s most expensive public option is our local public university (Purdue)! He has full ride (or full tuition) offers from several OOS publics, including all public SEC schools!
GaelRacer, what schools offered full tuition? I haven’t found many for OOS students.
Texas Tech, Ohio, USC, Arkansas, Central Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Georgia, Montana State, and Missouri all offer automatic full tuition and some offer full-ride to NMS Finalists. This is just the list of schools that we investigated…
plus Baylor
My son received $24,000 per year at Miami of Ohio OOS. We received the letter last week and were surprised. He had 1390 SAT (30 ACT) one sitting and 3.65 GPA (mitigating circumstances) he has a 4.3 senior year. I understand they are holistic and he has some solid EC’s (organizes benefit concerts for Chicago disadvantaged youth, coaches youth hockey) and talented essay writer so I am assuming that’s why he received such a generous award. We are from Illinois, Stevenson high school. MOO wasn’t really in the finals for us but has become more appealing. Overall, he has received very generous awards for all schools he’s applied to outside of Illinois. For anyone reading this, take all info here with a grain of salt because responses I received here were VERY discouraging with regard to merit awards when I posted my son’s stats. In the end, I suppose it was a good thing because we’ve been shocked by the generous awards.
Accounting major:
Indiana university $12,000 (not good compared to cost) but excellent business school
Marquette ($29,500 plus essay contest in February - potential $2,000 additional)
University of Illinois (nada - just surprised he was admitted ranked #2 in country)
Vanderbilt - rejected ;( as expected
Tulane - accepted but no award to date
Emory - I think they send decision in February
Good luck
We haven’t either. Received acceptance letter, but no scholarship info. Does that mean there won’t be any? I read on another site that they do another wave in February, but that was a thread from two years ago. Any insight from others here?
My in state D has not received any scholarship offers from Miami yet. Judging by posts here from OOS students receiving scholarships, does it mean she is not getting one? Confusing.
My son just received his merit aid letter. OOS, 30 ACT, 4.0, State Champ Golfer, and other. He got $12,000, which is just what I expected. With his ROTC scholarship, and this scholarship which he can use for R&B it’s gonna be hard to go somewhere else. MIami “gets it”.
I know some people received more aid after their initial letter, and I was wondering: when are the Stamps Scholars announced? It is in March when the final scholarship letters are sent out?
@VH2018 that’s amazing!
Miami calculates a superscore for merit scholarships so I assume that is why he got so much.
