I’m pretty sure he’s talking about the A. James Clark general scholarship (4k a year)

No, I didn’t apply for EES. It was a generic one, no name, lol.

What is ur residency (IS or OS)?

Instate. (IS)

Any idea if they consider ACT scores? Also what about the difficulty of your HS program. My son is in the IB diploma program which is much more rigorous than if he had stayed at his home high school. He sacrificed his GPA a bit by doing IB. His WGPA is 4.4, 2100 SAT, 33 ACT and he was accepted into Bioengineering and Scholars. He has received No merit award at all!! So disappointing to say the least. He also has many diverse extracurriculars and leadership too. He too has friends with lower stats that got money. Doesn’t seem to make sense.

My son finally got his President’s scholarship award by mail today. He got $5000. Apparently the earlier letter sent by UMD in mid-March never reached us. He did not get any award from College of Engineering. The Engineering school award is based on Residency, Need and then Merit. I guess he was not selected on the first 2 criteria.

Congratulations on FINALLY getting the President’s scholarship! Your son certainly deserved that AND MORE!

thank u very much!!1

That’s awesome! I went to a open house today and an admissions counselor today and asked if my file could be reviewed. She said that it would be. I know someone else in this thread asked an admissions counselor to look over their file for merit scholarship. Does anyone know if I should be hopeful, or will it not make a difference?

I also got the president’s scholarship yesterday! I would have appreciated getting it earlier because i commit to another school. Now Im torn with my decision again =[

moreadventurous- I didn’t have any luck with it. they just said I didn’t qualify for it etc. Good luck though!

the admissions counsellor said that they would review my son’s file when we asked about scholarship when we visited during Spring Open House. However, I was told later that my son had been awarded The presidential scholarship ($5000) and the letter sent out in mid-March (before we went for the open house). But we nver fgot that letter. The letter that we got last Friday was dated April 7, 2010. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I’m not expecting anything, but still hoping :)

BUMP
Bumping this thread up for LauraG (to give an idea of awards made to last year’s applicants, page through this thread).

I don’t understand what the poster was talking about here. FAFSA is only considered if your SAT score is below 1500? The son scored a 1490, which is below a 1500, unless I misinterpreted the post. And assuming I didn’t, why would FAFSA be considered for below 1500?

I think the point is, if the SAT is above 1500, the award is merit-based only. If the SAT is below 1500, they take need into account to some extent.

Yes, HoComom is correct. Sorry I didn’t make that more clear. By the way, my son is at Maryland and LOVING it!
