Merit Aid

Is the scholarship on an annual basis or every year you have to just hope and pray that they give you enough scholarship for you to be able to attend school that year?

D got admitted to the honors program with almost full ride for the first year, but i am concerned that next year, they might not provide such generous scholarship. Anyone has any insights?

Do any students know how difficult is it to maintain a 3.2 GPA to qualify for continued merit aid?

$20,000 Dean's Scholarship!!!

2110 SAT
9/437 Rank

I am so excited!

But this is estimated financial aid. I dont really understand this since my efc was 0 and its still leaving a lot to be paid by my parents.

douglass scholarship- 20k
some loan- 3500
another loan- 2000
employment- 2000
some loan- 3000
some grant- 750
pell grant- 5350

for 36600 total including loans

For some reason I was expecting more? What do you guys think?

27k presidential scholarship ^_^

$18,000 Dean Scholarship!

Does AU pretty much just provide merit $, per the Dean's Scholarship? Is the Dean's an aggregate amt based on merit and need, or just merit only?
What about need based FINAID from AU?

No merit.
I'm international.
No fin aid.
So I have to pay 50000$. lol

Financial aid office explained to my wife that we should have filled out a profile for our Daughter. As far as Douglass scholarship, you would have to be nominated by somebody, school counselor perhaps.

$27,000 Presidential Scholarship and Honors Program! Veeeeeeeeeery alluring, and veeeeeeeeeeeeeery exciting.

2170 SAT (superscored 2 tries)
20/550 Rank

I heard a rumor that American basically doles out scholarships using a list... that is, they list students based on academic achievements (GPA and SAT) and then divide up the loot based on how students rank.

Any truth in this. FWIW, I didn't get any scholarships, though I did get 9k in grants, probably need based.

I think I'm the exception Red knight!!!!!!!
lol

Deans Schol $22 000

SATS 1190/1890
Top 10%

I think it might have been my essay or my good A-Levels ( 4 A'S) def not the SAT hahaha congratz all!

27,000/yr presidential!! Why not 5K more and call it full tuition?? lolllzz!!

jamesnew do you have any need? Because I had 1450/2200 and 40/600 class rank only got $20k a year. Maybe your school is just more competitive

Not exactly! As in I do need the Need but I didn't demonstrate it becuz I'm international, and it goes solely on Merit. I think it might be cuz SATS are not considered for Internationals only A-Levels ETC of which I got 4 As and 300/300 for English Lit... I'm guessing thats why :)

Quite honestly, I would have killed for your SAT score!!! :...( sniff sniff sigh,

Congrats for the scholarships!

LOOKing back inthis forum - a couple years ago AU put a max on merit scholarhips. So there's no free rides. But it looks a just a rare few come close with other grants and/or need based grants/loans.

Don't get discouraged if there is a big gap between offer and need.
I understand a $10-20,000 gap offer is common. Anyway A year ago we were offered 48% of need.

21k$ in dean's scholarship
29k$ total including the above and grants and loans

GPA 3.88 UW
ACT 31
good essay and recs

32k Presidential Scholarship + Honors
1940/2400 SAT
My school doesn't do GPA or class rank, but I got 3 'A's at A-level, and 2 'A's at AS-level.
I thought my essay had some clumsy bits, and I have a feeling that at least 1 of my recs was generic.

^ how did you get the presidential scholarship with 1940 sat?? are u an urm??

I have no idea, it came as a surprise! On top of that, I've been accepted into honors! I guess American University might have looked more at my A-levels than my SATs, and my A-level grades are higher than the requirements for Cambridge / Oxford.

I'm half white, half Asian, so I don't think that means I'm a URM. I'm an international student from England but living in Singapore if that helps.
