Merit Awards

Does anyone know whether merit awards have been communicated yet? My son got his need-based financial aid from Pitt today and it was a big ol’ zero. Hoping for reasonable merit aid to get him over the finish line without having to borrow a bunch (out of state).

My OOS daughter got $5000, significantly less than the other schools she has heard back from. We just received merit for her twin for UD today, $10,000, honestly we didn’t expect anything (30 ACT, 3.8 WGPA). Pitt us off the lust.

@FloopThereItIs My understanding is that merit aid will be offered during the entire month of February.

@Mjkacmom, when did she hear from Pitt on merit aid? My son only received his need-based aid, which included no grants and only the $5500 unsubsidized federal loan. Perhaps that means he’s getting no merit aid? I certainly hope that’s not the case. I’d love Pitt for him.

Merit awards have been given out… but there doesn’t seems to be a set pattern as to who gets them. My daughter is in-state with high stats (1570 SAT; National Merit Finalist; 4.0/4.76 GPA 13 APs, good ECs) and she only got $2000 a year…

@RockyPA a 1570 and only $2k/year? That’s really too bad. I assume she’ll go somewhere else due to that paltry aid? Where else is she thinking?

Yes she most likely will go elsewhere… not sure where yet!

Last week I think. It’s low considering she is OOS. She needs to narrow down her list anyway.

My son received his merit award over the weekend. OOS, applied in November, accepted in January.

@kpk2021 , was merit aid communication separate from need-based aid notification?

I think merit awards can happen up until March 1st if I remember correctly although the early bird usually gets the worm.

@RockyPA I remember a similar story last year from an OOS very high stats applicant. He ended-up at MIT but got nothing from Pitt. I think the OP was “TheVulcan”.

@chmcnm yes I saw those posts from last year. That student had also been accepted to the School of Computing and Information at Pitt… not sure if that is a factor. There was also another high stats student also accepted to SCI that received zero aid.

@RockyPA Not sure where your daughter applied but we were able to visit Temple last year. S20 is at GT so can provide feedback on those two if she applied to either.

she didn’t apply to Temple, but she did get into GT.

@chmcnm , my son got into Temple, but his merit award was quite small. We found Villanova became a lot cheaper than Pitt, which surprised me.

@RockyPA , Georgia Tech is an amazing school!

@FloopThereItIs yes it is! She is happy to have it as an option!

Yes, it was a separate email.

@FloopThereItIs that’s too bad. Temple was S20’s best offer financially. All we would’ve had to pay was R&B. I was impressed with the business school. I liked how the stats and analytics were integrated into the business programs. The Fox honors program was also solid. They really look out for their top students. Villanova for less than Pitt is pretty good. It sounds like your son has good options.

My daughter’s merit from Temple is her highest, $13,000 higher than Pitt. Her sister with even better stats got no merit from Villanova.
